Hi my name is Joan and I have a quacker parrot. I named the parrot Baby. Baby is very sweet, but likes to speak a lot of time running all over me and biting along the way .. I forgot to mention I found Baby , so I don’t know how old Baby is .. is it normal for them to make cracking sound with their beaks.. it seems to be similar to a human grinding his teeth..

Welcome to you and Baby. I suppose that what you're asking about is beak grinding. That's what parrots do when they're contented, or when they're sleepy-- or sometimes, both.

Hi and welcome to the Forum! Baby is obviously very loved and loving in return...they DO like to nip, though, these quakers! When Bonnie nips too hard I say "careful" or "be nice, now!" and she is more gentle (note - this doesn't work with my husband, who she bites viciously). I think cnyguy is correct about the beak grinding. It's normal. Bonnie often eats some food, then sits on a perch making the little grinding noise. I think they have food in their crops after eating it and then they break it down in their crops before it goes further - if this is wrong, someone will correct me! Hope you enjoy the Forum.

Hi Joan and baby ! Welcome..your quaker sounds a lot like mine ! Buddy will forage abound the floors a lot, often times stopping to look up to me while snapping his beak ! I think bitybird..is right. At 1st I thought he had something in his beak he shouldn't have and it drove me nuts, but upon checking him out I found nothing. It's something he does every day now. I just got him a mineral block that I'm gonna tie onto his cage so he can "hone" his beak up ! As for the nipping thing..it seems to be a trait among most quakers to always have the beak to the ground like a dog has his nose, but chewing along the way. He will climb up my jeans on his way to my shoulder using his beak along the way, stopping to chew a little. Be careful as they can open up a hole in your shirt really quick ! I just got done painting my whole house. Should decide to do it all over again ,I have plenty of painters shirts now ! Cheers !

Hello Joan and Baby.... I hope you find this forum very informative. I assume you have never had a quaker parrot before therefore, you are in for a lot of surprises. They can be like little kittens purring on your shoulder or they can be like a vicious dog... barking and snapping when they really want something....lol. But don't worry... most the time they are just funny little birds that are smart as heck.
Please feel free to ask any questions that you might have as there are many people on here who will always help.
