I’ve had my Quaker parrot for about 5 years now, but he still doesn’t recognize me when I take my glasses off.
I could be playing with him with my glasses on, but the moment I take them off the little booger looks at me in absolute bewilderment. He starts to act like I’m a stranger and wants to bite me.
Does anyone know why he acts this way?

It's not so much that your QP doesn't recognize you without your glasses-- he just doesn't understand why you would take them off and change your appearance. Parrots tend to object when their favorite humans do anything that makes them look different, especially if the changes haven't been explained to-- and approved by-- the parrots, in advance.

My QP Oscar tries to take my glasses off me every chance he gets. He has chewed two pairs already but just the plastic ends and the optometrist said he had never had to fix a pair chewed by a bird... dogs and cats yes... but never a bird.. so he did the repair for me for free. lol lol

I must try that approach for other things...mmm, lawn mower repairs, vacuum cleaner, the possibilities are endless.

He knows it's you. He just doesn't like for you to make decisions like whether to take off your glasses. All decisions are HIS to make. Wait til you get new glasses. I would suggest that when it's time for new ones, you try to find frames that are as much like the old ones as possible.

There's a thought. I got new glasses recently, and Clyde examined them closely before bestowing royal approval. He was not pleased that I had chosen them without his input. Reminded me of when I got my first glasses without my mom. LOL

Thanks for all your responses-his behavior makes a lot more sense now.

You never want your fid to bite you. So without your glasses on - start with him as though you never met. Ie. start training all over. If you don't use clicker training - I recommend that you learn to use it. You will build trust and a tighter relationship. Then you start doing the same behavioral exercises with glasses and then without, with then without. When your fid (don't know the name) behaves the same way towards you with or without your glasses - you're ready for something new.
