A friend gave me her 14 yr. old Quaker Parrot and she had told me that she had to trim his beak, but failed to tell me how. I have had him about a month now and it really has grown. I had cockatiels in the past & the only thing I had to do with them was to clip their wings. He will not let me hold him yet. I was told he wouldn't really use the " chew" toys or anything like that. What can I do ?

Hi there. You really shouldn't need to trim a healthy bird's beak. Even if he is not much of a toy fan, if you provide things with different consistencies, like some perches made of hard substances, he should be able to take care of his beak himself. If you're concerned about the length, perhaps you could post a photo? And welcome, by the way!

Welcome to the Forum! Ordinarily, parrots' beaks don't need trimming, but they do occasionally get overgrown. In that case, it's usually best to check with an avian veterinarian experienced in beak trimming. If your QP is due for a well-bird checkup, the vet will examine the beak then and will let you know if any trimming is needed.

Welcome to the forum, you might try different types of toys, some birds are picky and only like certain kinds. For example Casey wont go near any toy with sisal but there are others qps on here that love it, hopefully you can find something your qp likes to chew on.
