Hi all!
I'm fairly new here (about 3 months). Just wondered what seed everyone's quaker ate?? I'm still trying to see what she likes but I don't want to buy a mix that's too fatty. She has a really good vegetable diet but just want to know which seed to buy. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance. Amanda

Hi Amande, you'll find most of the Forum members have their parrots on pellets, because it is much healthier for them. There are many pellet brands available - Zupreem & Harrison's are a couple that have a good reputation. Here in Australia we don't have a great selection, but you can actually order them online from Amazon. I give Bonnie 2 tablespoons of pellets and about 1/2 a teaspoon of seed (generic medium parrot mix). There are a few threads on this forum about how to convert your quaker's diet from seed to pellets. It can sometimes be a pain to do, but it's a much better option for them long-term (health-wise). You should continue to offer a wide selection of fruits and vegetables, even if you convert your quaker to pellets. Hope this helps!

Though they mainly eat pellets and vegetables, my parrots get a little seed mix every day. I prefer Higgins, either California Blend or Safflower Gold, neither of which contain any sunflower seeds. Both have a few pellets in the mix, along with dried fruits and vegetables, pumpkin seeds and some nuts. There are things in the mixes that the birds don't like, like the large, hard red millet seeds-- and, in the Safflower Gold, peanuts in the shell, which the parrots don't get (I throw them outdoors for the blue jays and crows to argue over, though often a squirrel swoops in, ends the birds' dispute and takes the peanuts ).
