Yesterday, Ringo Starling became obsessed with a toy on top of her cage. She beat it up and chattered and sang and squawked and beat it up some more, to the point that I actually had to put a towel over it so she'd stop and go to bed last night. This morning, I took the towel off and she picked up right where she left off. She turned 5 in May and has never yet gone into season (starlings' beaks turn yellow when they do, so there's no doubt). I sincerely hope she isn't going to start now, in the middle of the coldest weather we've had for a couple of years. Having never lived through a breeding season with her, all I have to go on is how the outdoor starlings behave and apparently, they get really argumentative and, frankly, whacko.

It seems ALL of your critters are whacko, Siobhan! (It's not your fault, though!). Just as well they all found each other! I didn't know that about starlings' beaks turning yellow when they're in season...interesting. How cold is it where you are? We are in summer here - in Darwin it's 34 degrees Celsius every day (pretty much all year round), but we're in Melbourne at present and Christmas Day was only 20 degrees Celsius.

It's 12 degrees Fahrenheit here this morning (I don't know how to convert to Celsius) but the good news is, Ringo seems to have resumed normality this morning. She demanded her wormies (dried mealworms) and chattered to me while I dried my hair -- she sits on the edge of my dressing table seat and supervises the process. Maybe it was just a mood and not impending yellow beak.

I don't know how to convert to Celsius I do it this way: Fahrenheit to Celsius converter which says that 12 F is -11 C. Some of our birds seem to be getting their seasons mixed up, regardless of the outdoor weather (it's frigid here too). Ralph has been getting friendly with his rope perch more often the last few days. I'm hoping it's a sign of an early spring, but that's pretty doubtful.

Yeah, Rocky's kinda frisky, too, and Clyde keeps saying "pretty brrrrrrrrrrrrrd." Not a good sign.

Huh.... you want to try our weather.... NOT!!!! We are in a deep freeze and it is just now starting to let go. Every morning my thermometer says -32C and with the wind... it easily hits -44C.
Today was a good day... only -15C but the wind and snow blowing was horrid. I went walking anyway... cause I figure you burn more calories walking in the winter than summer. The Husky dog I walk ... just loves it. She runs around in circles and I swear she is smiling and laughing at me. Such a pleasure to walk with.
I come home looking like a snowman.... just covered in snow and frost but soaking wet under my outside clothes from working so hard. Overall was a good walk.
