Good evening fellow Fid lovers! I'm not necessarily "new" to the forum... I've been popping in for a few years now but since I'm ready for my new Quaker baby, I figured I'd go ahead and become part of the community. I was raised with an African Grey and Eclectus (both my mother's) but I am now in a place to have my own feathered baby! After much research and knowing my personality, a Quaker is just what I'm looking for! I am on a waiting list for a baby male. I want to name him Malakai. This is a derivative of Malachi meaning 'My Messenger" in Hebrew. I have 2 very sweet (rescued) babies already... Amikah, my Shiba Inu mix and Leo, my Balinese/Tabby mix. I think they will both do well with "Malakai". I plan on having his cage set-up a good month or two before he arrives to get my other pets accustomed to the rules. Any other suggestions or ideas are welcome!
Also, has anyone had any experience with Hagen's Tropimix for Small Parrots? Since I'm planning on feeding Malakai fresh fruits and veggies, should I just settle with a pellet like the Tropican or Zupreem?

Hi there Daislandr, welcome to the Forum! I am in Darwin, Australia (top end) and our quaker is Bonnie, nearly 4 years old. Sounds like you're in for an exciting time...can't wait for your posts when you get your baby Malakai. Re the food, I have no knowledge of Hagen's, but lots of Forum members use Zupreem/Harrison's. I am sure you will go very well.

Hello, fellow Texan and welcome to forum membership! I am just barely in Texas, due west of Shreveport, Louisiana, so quite a distance from you.
Any of the better quality pellets should have a good balance of nutrients overall, so it's not going to matter much if you get one that emphasizes fruits or veggies or whatever. You might have to experiment with them, to find ones Malakai really likes. My birds have done well with Harrison's. Higgins InTune is another good one.

Thank you both for the warm welcome! I am somewhat familiar with Shreveport. I grew up in Beaumont and have been to LA a few times. I am going to look into Harrison's for sure. I've been hearing rave reviews. Higgins is new to me... more research ahead! Biteybird, I would love to hear more about Bonnie. Is she the blue beauty in your profile pic? They have such beautiful colors. I really want an original green though. Maybe I'm boring but I just love the combination of green and blue.

Biteybird, I would love to hear more about Bonnie. Is she the blue beauty in your profile pic? Ah, yes, she is! I never realised until a couple of years ago that the green quakers have blue under their wings - so pretty. You could check out Julianna's posts about Oscar in flight; some great photos of the green quakers' colours. Bonnie is a VERY feisty character (as you may realise if you read through some of the posts on this forum). She may be pretty, but...she's also a force to be reckoned with!

Hello and welcome to the forum. You are on the right track with lots of veggies and fruits. You will find out quickly which ones they love and which ones they do not. Just please stay away from avocado... as it is a killer. My Oscar eats almost every fruit ... if it is peeled and held by me. He doesn't like to get his toes dirty... lol.
Good luck with your new little one. I am sure you are anxious. If you have any questions about Quakers... please do not hesitate to ask. We are all here to help one another.
