Greetings all,
I am Rick and I got my new Quaker companion 3 days ago. He is a beautiful green 6 month old (presumed) boy.
My little friend came from a young man who had to give him up due to real life commitments who had passed the bird onto his family to resell. He was sold as 'very timid'.
I have lots of time and patience so him being timid did not put me off me getting him. I have set him up in my main room close to me. I left him to settle for the day.
Day 2 he escaped his cage and flew into many walls and objects while I was changing his water act. He did not injure himself but it was definitely a wake up call to birdy proof my place better. I also looked into wing clipping as I lost a cockatiel around 10 years ago due to a flying accident:(
After much reading and tutorial videos and reading pros and cons I carefully clipped the tips. Overall it was a very easy and successful to do. He was very calm under a towel.
Day 3( today) he is a completely different bird. Nothing but affection. He let's me stroke anywhere on him. I can almost check his wings but he is a bit nervous on that. Hand feed and he is happy to sit in my hands cupped and walk on my chest and shoulder s. I can't seem to get him to step up yet though. He just looks at me like 'eerm what you doing?'. He let's me, my wife and my two young daughter stroke him. He does these little nibbles(gentle biting) when I stroke his beak. Is this him playing or am I making him mad?
Also day 1 he was making very loud ear piercing screeches but day 3 he hasn't made any. Could this have been fear noises and has chilled out a bit now? He likes to take short naps in the day. Is this normal? I do not wake him when he naps. He is eating, pooping and drinking fine. Sometimes rattles his toys.
Its pretty late here now. Thanks for reading my wall of text
