Well... it was quite hilarious the other day as we had company and we were all sitting outside at the table. Oscar was running around on the table as usual and before we knew it he took a cigarette out of my company's package and ran over to me with it. It was just too funny to see him carrying it around. I simply put my hand out and he hopped on and I played tug of war with him a little for the cigarette but eventually he gave in. What a bird. ha ha ha

My starling does that sort of thing. The others don't show any interest.

like little kids, i think they do it for attention. quakers my coco included, like to test limits and see what they can get by with. one time mr. coco found my sister-in-law's burning cigarette in a ashtray, picked it up and was bouncing around on the living room table with it in his beak, rolling it around with his beak. while funny i removed the smoke from his beak and parked him in his cage to stay out of trouble. he has took off with my pack of smokes and hid them from me. never a dull moment with a qp in the house. coco is 15 yrs old now and going strong. little sucker will probably outlive me.

I read that since Quakers naturally build nests out of sticks, they tend to steal stick shaped items from humans and hide it to use later as nesting material. Has anyone seen their bird attempt to build a nest?

Ralph doesn't build a nest, but he likes to arrange and rearrange his sticks. I give him thin wooden dowels cut to lengths of six to eight inches. He's fussy about his building matrtials and rejects things like plastic straws which aren't sturdy enough to suit him.

Buddy does the same as ralph..but he uses anything shredded, gathering items in a corner of his upper pan on his cage. He then defends this place as his holy land. He has never tried to gather sticks ect even when available, but he's just a year and a half. Julianna oscar builds good nests, but I don't know when it all started as far as age goes. Since he has been thru raging hormones,I have removed shredding toys and easy reach materials in favor of rope and foam toys to combat this condition. It had gotten to the point that he started plucking feathers out of frustration..so keep that in mind if you provide such materials, you can induce hormone levels.
