Johnny had night frights last night and apparently also set Freddie off. The two have long since refused to sleep in their cages, and wherever they happen to choose for a night perch is where they sleep. Freddie was on the hanging lamp and Johnny was in Freddie's cage last night. I had gone to bed and heard the tell-tale sounds of freakout and jumped up (and Hubby said, "What?" and I said, "Somebody's having night terrors." It's a mom thing. He wouldn't understand, LOL). When I got in their room, Johnny was careening around squawking and I got a light on and found him in the mop bucket (empty!). He hissed at me, but if a bird hissing slowed me down, I wouldn't have lasted this long as a parront. I scooped him up anyway and talked to him until I was sure he was alert and knew where he was. It's kind of like sleepwalking and you have to be sure they're really awake and alert before you set them down. Meanwhile, Freddie was over on his cage climbing up the side of it. I assume Johnny's freakout set him off, and he ended up over there. They have nightlights, but it's not enough light to fly by, and Johnny had bashed into the boings, but he's okay. So's Freddie. Johnny went into his cage for the remainder of the night and Freddie refused to cooperate, so he spent the rest of the night on top of his cage. Both Quakers griped at me for waking them up, but Jade relented and said "kiss kiss" when I told them to go back to sleep. Freddie hasn't had a night terror of his own since he was a baby, but Johnny has them occasionally. I turned on a fish tank light so it wouldn't be so bright in there that everybody would think it was morning, which of course disturbed the fish. They thought it was morning and wanted their breakfast. LOL

My first experience with night frights happened while I was bird sitting a friend's Meyer's parrot. Scared the crap outta me. I knew I had done something wrong and my friend would never trust me again.

Rocky had a night terror once early on and has never had one again, and I hope he never does. Egad. As bad as Johnny's occasional terrors are, they're nothing compared to a full sized umbrella cockatoo thrashing around squawking. And Johnny has lived with us for years and trusts me, whereas Rocky had only just moved in and didn't know me well yet, so calming him was not only difficult, but dangerous.

Ralph had just one night fright too, when there was a power failure and the apartment went completely dark. It took me quite a while to calm him, by the light of a battery-powered flashlight. Right after that, I bought a night light with a built-in backup battery-- and there hasn't been a QP night fright, or a power outage, since then. Scooter the CAG used to get scared when my former downstairs neighbors would slam doors at night, and would thrash around. Since they were evicted downstairs Scooter hasn't had any more nighttime scares either.

This morning, I went into the back bedroom to turn on the light and start getting ready for work and scared the fluff off Ringo Starling. It was after 8 a.m. and I assure you the sun was well up by then, and the curtains and windows were open because it's been hot the last couple of days, and she must have been sound asleep anyway, because she had a little freak out.

Shah has never had night frights but the cockatiels occasionally had them. I have a night light in with them but haven't heard anything since I moved here 12 months ago - they have their own room now but the door is left ajar so I can hear what is happening.
