I recently acquired Sunshine from his previous family. He is approximately 9 years old. He has been with me for 4 days. We have had three training sessions together with him and my other two birds. Yesterday (training session #2) he started rubbing his beak on my hand. Today he continued. Combined with his body language at the time, this seems to be an affectionate behavior. Is that what this is? Should I let this continue? He's only known me since Tuesday!
Side note: Training day #1 (Wednesday) he drew blood, but eventually stepped up and accepted his treat. Day #2 (Thursday) he only threatened to bite a few times, but was much more cooperative and the session ended with the beak rubbing on my hand. Day #3 (today) was more beak rubbing, and a few more threats. I am amazed at his progress!

It sounds to me like beak maintenance, and not something to worry about. I would take it as an indication that he's well on the way to getting comfortable with you - no small feat after only a few days! Welcome to the forum!

Hi Nicolew39 and welcome to you and your little master. I agree with Easttex. It sounds like he's trying to hone his beak - our Bonnie does this on my husband's shorts (these little characters often don't realise that fabric or human hands won't actually work for beak maintenance!). You are doing really well with him at such an early stage. Well done!

You should also make sure that your Quaker has something to file his beak on. They love to keep it trim and shiny. Oscar has one perch that has small rocks on it... and he uses it daily to rub his beak... and I must say... his beak is very pretty.
