Hi all. It's been many years since once handled birds, and although I have some experience with macaws, I've forgotten most of what I knew. I just brought home a baby Quaker who was recently weaned from a wonderful breeder. He's cuddly and doesn't seem to have the slightest incentive to bite, even when I'm bothering him trying to get him to step up. He will step up some of the time, but is not used to me yet. Very sweet bird, even swung upside down for the first time today in only a couple of days being home!
I have a small concern though, where he seems pretty puffed up most of the time and he isn't interested much in toys (though I'm not that surprised, everything is still so new). The puffing up seems to constantly come up with "the bird may be sick" on Google, so I'm a little wary of this. It's not very puffy, but enough for me to notice. He also stretches fairly often.
Still, the bird has a great appetite. He's eating well, vocalizing more, getting more comfortable over three days, and I keep the temperature pretty reasonable. Nothing is of the ordinary except for the puffy feathers and seeming kind of sleepy sometimes (though he's always alert when I offer my hand or talk to him). Was wondering if this may be an anxiety thing, as he's still not even been here three days, or if this is absolutely abnormal.
Thanks!

G'day, crimekiwi! Welcome to the Forum. It sounds to me like you have a very content bird. Being puffed up is often a sign of the quaker being comfortable (at least in my experience) and if it's eating well and stretching, as well as stepping up for you, that all sounds good to me. Often if the quaker's feathers are slicked down flat they are on 'high alert' and anxious. Don't worry about the disinterest in toys - many of the Forum members' quakers aren't interested in them either. Many quakers usually just want the undivided attention of their human slaves. It would be worth booking a vet visit for your new friend, just to check that he/she is healthy. Do you have an avian vet close by that you can visit? Cheers & hope you enjoy the forum. Let us know how you go!

I agree with biteybird. It sounds more likely that you're seeing a relaxed bird than a sick one. It is always a good idea to get a vet check when you bring a new bird home, though. He's so young that he may not know what to do with toys yet, and it might help if you show him how to play with them.
Welcome to the forum!🙂

My Pidge is around 10 months old and friends comment on the fact that he is often puffed up. I thought he could be cold but it seems to be just normal.
