Yesterday I went to the bank to withdraw some money and my bank card was not working. So naturally I used my husband's. Later that day I went to pay for some products I purchased with my visa card and it came back Declined. So I tried my second visa card and it came back declined as well. Home I go to phone the bank and find out what is happening.
It turns out that I am a victim of fraud. The visa company somehow allowed someone acting as me to 1) add another user to my visa cards, 2) change my mailing address from Ontario to British Columbia, 3) raise the maximum on my visa card from $1,000 to $3000 and 4) change my phone number. How this person got through their security questions I do not know but tomorrow I will be demanding an explanation. They also mailed this person two visa cards with my numbers on them because they are now a second user.
This person managed to get into my Personal Line of Credit and withdrew $19,000 in 4 days from two different banking places. They withdrew $2400 at a time and some days... three times in that day.
Now I have three cards that have been cancelled. Two visa cards and my personal debit card. What a day that was. I was on the phone with my bank and the visa company for hours. They both have sent the information to their fraud centers and I guess I will hear the results in maybe 6 months if I am lucky.
The only time I ever used my visa card on-line was to purchase a few clothes from China and I always used the very small visa card so that if ever stolen the person would not get more than $1,000. Yeah Right!!
I will not be responsible for the lost money and tomorrow I will be able to check the visa statements to see if there are any other charges that I did not make.
I don't think I will be ordering from China again but my bank should have made sure that the visa card does not allow access to my personal line of credit. That will be taken care of tomorrow.
Now you see why I say.... Oh why me??

Sorry about your credit card theft. I can identify with it, having had an online bank account raided a few years ago. Hope you can get things cleared up quickly and efficiently.

Holy Dooley, Julianna! That is really stressful. I had a deduction of nearly $4000 on my Visa card about 4-5 years ago (ironically JUST after I had paid my credit card off completely). The stress of it was huge, as I had no savings and used to pay all my bills using the card, then pay it off on pay days. Well they cancelled my card after I reported it and I didn't have any cash or savings and no 2nd credit card to fall back on for daily shopping, etc. It took over 3 weeks for my card to be replaced.
The thing I couldn't understand was how my card was still in my wallet the whole time. Now I have an RFID card sitting on top of each credit card I carry (which blocks card scanning technology).
A friend of mine actually had his identity stolen a few years ago. The only reason he found out was because he applied for a Passport and they said "you've already got one"....some guy had been impersonating him for over 7 years and had every piece of identity documentation you could think of. :0

Wow, all of you! For a few years there, I was having to have my cards replaced frequently due to fraudulent activity, but my bank caught it every time. I had to scramble once when my purse was taken, but I've never had the dubious pleasure of identity theft. Aside from the legal/financial hassle, it's sort of creepy.

Wow. That's not good his stressful! We've had our cards replaced once as a preemptive measure due to problems at a store we had used.

All is well. I got a new debit card the next day and two new visa cards within 3 days. The bank replaced all my money in one weeks time. I had heard so many horror stories of this taking years but I guess since it wasn't my entire wallet... just one small visa card... it was all corrected in record time. Thank you Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
