Pidge bites a lot. It is usually curious or affectionate biting but it hurts. He needs to pull out hairs by the roots, leaving specks of blood.
A guy was just here and he said they used to wear citronella oil to stop their budgie biting . Has anyone heard of this. Does it work?

I recommend against using it. For one thing, sure, it might repel a bird, but it doesn't allow you to address the problem itself. You're better off using positive reinforcement to train him to better behavior, in my opinion. It's more work, but assuming you keep reinforcing good behavior, you'll have longer lasting results and you'll strengthen your bond with Pidge.
I also recommend against it for health reasons. Birds' lungs are a series of air sacs, and since breathing is not a simple in and out for them, things stay in their systems longer. They're very sensitive. Think canary in the coal mine. Citronella is not toxic in and of itself, but you should try to avoid anything that gives off strong vapors around Pidge.

I could not agree more. Since I have gotten Oscar I have stopped using air fresheners, scented candles (which I loved) and any type of spray when he is around.

I wouldn't mind a bit of depilatory action if he didn't take the skin with it. Looked up citronella oil and yes it is a no no.

If you can get them on you, wait until it tries to bite, then shake your hand or whatever your bird is perched on slightly. If they continue biting after you make a mini 'earthquake', continue to shake, getting slightly faster. Don't do it to the point where the bird could fall off or injure itself.
If you can't get them on anything, try consulting the world-wide web.
