I thought this was a good write-up on the subject. The Gabriel Foundation is a large parrot rescue organization in Colorado.

I like this article. It summarise positive behaviour techniques very succinctly. The term 'aversive' is one I haven't come across a lot yet, but we do use 'negative reinforcement' as a phrase over here. In my job the technique itself is basically the same working with humans as with birds, even though the rewards are different. Thanks, Easttex!

Some years back, I took an online course called Living and Learning with Parrots, where I learned about operant conditioning. It didn't take long to see that the instructors were practicing what they were preaching. Even after I realized that my every response was not, in fact, brilliant, their techniques really worked on me. It was a great experience, and one the most valuable courses I've ever taken.

Unfortunately, no. The last one was last year. It was very popular, and I was on a wait list for a couple of years. The creator, Dr Susan Friedman, felt that a lot of progress was made over the 15 years or so since it began. There's now a wealth of information out there, so it was retired. Her website has lots of great articles: www.behaviorworks.org/htm/articles_behavior_change.html

I put her up on the pedestal with Barbara Heidenreich. They're complementary, but different. If I'm having a problem, I'll go to Heidenreich for a solution. Friedman provides a deeper analysis and the framework for developing your own solutions. That's my take, anyway.
