Hello everyone! I'm trying out some new foraging toy ideas for Maya now that she's getting older to try and keep her occupied and lessen the likelihood of negative behaviours like screaming and plucking. Right now, she's a very happy birdie, but I do worry that she's bored during the day. When I get home, I see evidence of play with her toys, but I know parrots spend roughly 50% of their day in the wild foraging for food, so I want to change up a few things to keep her mind occupied. I'm making a few of my own toys as I can tailor them to her needs and make then the right size for her. I just wondered if it was ok to buy plain, white string without any dye in it? I know string or rope of any kind can be a potential swallowing hazard, but Maya has lots of rope and and string toys in her cage and doesn't seem to swallow or chew on them. I've found some toy making rope for birds online, but it's all quite thick and difficult to work with, whereas plain string is more versatile. What do you think?

Plain cotton string is fine.

You're welcome. Both parrots here keep busy untying and chewing on cotton strings (Scooter the CAG also ties knots in hers).

Pahahaha, they are funny! Great, I can get some today and start making some foraging toys for her to tear/untie/beat up!

You might remember that Oscar loves to beat up the empty toilet paper roll. Maybe tie it with your white string and see what happens?

Yes, Julianna, that's what I was thinking! I was going to stuff a toiled roll with some treats and some plain tissue, then tie the ends with string and hang it in her cage and see what she does. I expect she'll butcher it within an hour, but as long as she enjoys it! We've been doing lots of travelling together and performing recently, she's been on her harness lots, and going for adventures in her birdie backpack. She's been so good, I'm keen to make her some 'on the road' toys that'll keep her occupied in the car and on the train and such
