A few days ago, I saw a dog sitting by the side of the road, about a half mile from my house. I always carry dog food in my vehicle, and I pulled over to see if it was hungry. I have rarely seen such a pitiful sight as this dog. When I got a good look at her, my first thought was "leprosy". Then I realized it was just the absolute worst case of mange I'd ever seen. She had open sores all over, from scratching, I assume.
She was hungry, so I fed her and continued home, where I got a water bowl, a sheet for my back seat, and disposable gloves. I doubt that she'd felt much kindness in her life, but she was really responsive to me, and she loved being pet. But I could not get her into my car. I decided to return the next morning and try to earn her trust. Big mistake. I haven't seen her since, and I'm guessing that she was run off, if not shot, by the property owners. I feel so badly for not going back later that evening and forcing her to come with me. I have been haunted by that ever since.

Poor dog, at least you fed it and pet it, maybe it will turn up again, I can't imagine anyone would hurt it You had very good intentions, I hope it either turns up again or someone else has found it and is helping it.

Do you think a rescue group might have picked it up?

Don't beat yourself up over it, Easttex - if you'd forced her into the car she probably would have been more stressed and wouldn't have trusted you, so you're blaming yourself for something you would have felt guilty about regardless of what you did or didn't do. I guess the hard thing is simply not knowing what actually happened or where she ended up. But don't forget that there are kind people out there and something good may have happened.

I'd like to think that someone with a heart rescued her, but this is not a good part of the country for that sort of thing. I asked my neighbors to call me if they see her.

Poor dog. I have seen mange and it is a horrible thing for a dog. What you did was a very nice thing and you did what you could at the time. Pat yourself on the back.... because at least you tried.

Sorry to hear about this story But I agree with the others, definitely not something to beat yourself up over. You tried, and she wouldn't get in your car... And there is always a chance that something good did happen.
