So last night my Sun Conure, Melisandre, gave me a huge scare that I still haven't calmed down from. She was on top of her cage playing, and I was across the room. The next thing I know, I hear her thrashing about.
She had a toy, it was a piece of wire with wooden popsicle sticks and wooden beads on it. The wire looped around at the top to attatch to the clip, to hook onto the cage. She had just finished destroying the toy that day (it lasted her 2 full days, she's such a shredder), and I hadn't removed the wire yet. Well, I guess she was chewing on the top of the wire and managed to bend the loop around into a U shape. She somehow then managed to poke that loop through the small opening in the very back of her bottom beak, so she was "hooked". I had to hold her still and unscrew the toy so I could have room to see what was going on. It took well over 5 minutes, but I managed to hold her still in a towel, on her back, and got a pair of wire cutters and was able to remove the bulk of the wire toy - since it kept getting snagged on things as she was thrashing and fighting me. After this, I was finally able to pull the rest of the wire out.
I tried to inspect her the best I could, but this happened just 30 minutes before I had to leave for work. It didn't look like anything was wrong in the area under her beak, and I didn't see any blood there. Right before I left, I managed to get a peek into her mouth. She had some blood on her tongue, but not a large amount, and it looked like it was already partially dry or hardened - not fresh. My mom visited my house twice over the past some hours to check on her, and she seems to be doing ok. I'm so stressed over it.
So, I wanted to post this as a warning to everyone. I will be removing all toys that are made this way from both my bird cages, and if I receive any more like them I will be taking them apart and hanging them from yarn or something.
