So Poki just entered his second year mark, and he is doing very great actually. Besides becoming even more of 1 person bird, he is exteremelly adventurous. It happened that Poki had escaped twice within a week during new year holiday. He gave me almost a heart attack, and I was really prepared to lose him forever. But then on both occasions, Poki returned home safely by himself. And yes, he was free flighted. I actually decided to cut one side of his wings recently due to this 'trauma', lol. But he is free to roam to the house during the day, even when I was out to work. Actually I think because of the 'incident', Poki becomes even more closer to me. He stops his nipping habit and replaces it with lots of tender loving grooming, and he talks a lot more now with even more vocabulary, and also starting to collect items to build his nest which he never had interest before.

That is a lovely photo and Poki looks great! Wow, you were very lucky he came back to you after his adventures in the outside world. We have never clipped Bonnie's wings. Some members of this Forum do clip their quakers' wings, but I think most clip both sides (not just one), as they say it's better for the bird. You may want to check up on this. Thanks for sharing the photo!

Poki is quite the handsome fellow! As biteybird said, you're very lucky you got him back, not just once but twice. I also agree with her that you might revisit the single-sided clip. It can take their balance away so severely that they can't glide. If he should happen to fall from a good height, you'd want him to be able to glide rather than drop. It sounds like he is coming along very nicely!

It sounds like Poki is a real scamp. My QP Chuckie has managed to undue the 'lock' on his bird condo a couple of times. He doesn't get far when he launches from the table his house sits upon - I think he was clipped for too long to have the strength to do more than flutter to a controlled landing. Chuckie loves to play groom, I think it says you are an acceptable member of the flock. Poki may be thinking that when he grooms you. It is such a unique sensation and amazes me that they have such control that they don't break our rather fragile skin when they play groom. I have a warning phrase for times Chuckie gets a bit rough - it is 'ouch, that's me your biting'. Usually he looks up and tilts his head as if he is trying to understand what I just said. Does Poki purr before or during his 'grooming' activities?

Ha ha, Bruce, Bonnie also does some affectionate grooming/preening of my ears and the back of my neck. Sometimes she gets too enthusiastic about it, so I say "careful" and she seems to understand.
