Hi- I have two Quaker parrots male and female. I am in Australia. I came home from Work a few hours ago to find my girl down the bottom of the cage (large aviary) fluffed up. She is quiet and seems quite lethargic. I can't get her to a vet until tomorrow (14 hours time.). I have moved her into a smaller cage fully cleaned and placed paper down the bottom to monitor her urine/faeces. I have syringed some honey water into her- the first lot she regurgitated partly digested food. She laid 4 eggs about a month ago - not viable as there was no nesting box and has seemed fine eating drinking playful etc. I did move the birds cage outside two days ago because it was a warm and beautiful day- they were out there for about 4 hours- not chilly at all. I have now covered her cage and placed her next to the larger cage. Any other suggestions I can do to help her survive the night before we can see a vet? She will be seeing an Avian vet

I am not an Avian vet by any means but I have read about eggs being bound. Check her rear to see if there is a lump. Check very gently because if there is an egg stuck you would not want to break it. If you find a lump, try holding her in warm water to see if it will help open her up.
You say she threw up some food so there might be a blockage there as well. You never know what they can get into.
I agree with Jan... keep her warm and quiet.

she survived the night.....insert sigh of relief!!! She looks a little brighter (it's just on sunrise so I don't expect her to be super bouncy). She did drink water of her own accord & it looks like she did have more of the honey water through the night. Still feels a little cold so she's back to bed and we wait for the vet to open!

Update- she's egg bound- 2 eggs so staying at vet overnight- increase in calcium plus warmth to encourage them to pass , failingbthat manual extraction (if possible), failing that surgery. She is brighter & happier! Thanks for all the advice and well wishes!

I am glad you found out what is wrong. 2 eggs is a pretty big deal. Fingers and toes are crossed that she passes them quickly and is back home with you in no time. Please let us know how she goes.

Hello Sheree, I'm so sorry to hear about your little one and hope she's on the mend. Egg binding can be treated and your little one can recover. In the meantime, see if you can get hold of a calcium block for her, and make sure she has plenty of leafy greens to eat to help build up her calcium reserves. You probably do already, but also make sure your little one is on a pelleted diet; KAYTEEs, Zupreem, Haagen, Harrisons or Pretty Bird are all really good ones. Making sure she has plenty of calcium and protein during the summer months will help to prevent this from happening again. For future reference, I also keep a supply of avipro and some guardian angel on hand. If my little one ends up sick out of vet hours, it helps to settle her and keep her strength up until such time as I can get her to a vet. Sometimes, also, the vet will recommend these for infections or small viruses.
I hope your birdie recovers quickly, I know these things can be really scary. All the best!

Well it seems Miss Indie didn't want to this the easy way so she's had a caesarean - she pulled through ok- 2 eggs- second one was apparently HUGE and a strange shape- vet thinks she may have had an infection around the time the egg developed hence the weirdness of it. Vet doesn't want thus girl producing any more eggs so she now has a hormone implant. I will certainly up the calcium and was in process of changing to pellets........ Quite a costy little exercise but her life is precious & priceless! Thanks again- I'll post a pic of the patient when I collect her tomorrow!

That's great news Sheree. Didn't know they could have hormone implants - what a great idea.
