Hello everyone. I just joined this site and I thought I would stop in to say hello. I have a 2 1/2 year old female quaker named Lady (I often call her Ladybug!) and she is my baby. I have had her for about 9 months or so when I purchased both her and her mate, Pat. While I still have them both, we have separated them and, even though they were both nice and playful to begin with, they did have territorial issues and they did chase and bite. Now that we have separated them and my son has taken ownership of Pat and Lady stayed with me (they are both in the same house, just in different rooms), they have both calmed down tremendously and there have been no behavioral problems since. That was about 3 months ago. Pat and Lady seemed to like each other well enough and they were a bonded pair when we got them, but once we brought them home, they acted like they preferred to be with their humans over each other and were competing for food and attention all the time and the best answer was to separate them. It has worked out well.
I have past experience with multiple types of parrots, and our family still has several cockatiels, as those seem to be my daughters favorites. Lady is my first experience with a quaker, and I have to say, I am in love. She bonded with me on the first day that she came into our home and it has been that way since. She is very sociable with everyone, but it is very clear who she prefers. I love the mischievous nature of the quaker personality and I love the intelligence as well. I was thrilled when Lady spoke her first word last night, as I was told that she would probably never speak due to her age when we got her. I wasn't actually trying to get her to talk, but I do talk to her a lot and she rewarded me for it. I did expect a lot of noise from these birds, but they are actually pretty quiet. They do talk to each other some from their various rooms, but they don't really get vocal at all. They seem to be quite content and happy, and we are thrilled with them!
I look forward to exploring this forum and learning from those who are more experienced with this delightful little bird.
