My father-in-law ordered a baby cockatiel and it was close to the pickup date, but the lady said it wasn't well and not eating properly & she'd feel bad about selling it to him as it's a "runner". I THINK that's what was said. Also, it was rejected straight away by the mother and the lady had to hand-feed it right from the beginning.
Does anyone know what a "runner" means, please?

I came across a lot of "runner" lorikeets when I was banding (they were never released). It means they cant fly. While we cant be certain, it was thought that parent birds were being fed by well meaning people - but they were feeding them the wrong thing like bread, honey, etc. To be quite honest, if the mother has rejected it, it may not be a good bird to purchase. However, having said that, if your father-in-law is keen to get the bird then get a vet to assess it so he know what to expect.

Thanks Jan, that now makes sense! At least the lady was honest enough to tell my father-in-law that it's not an appropriate bird for her to sell. I'll pass on what you've said and see if he wants a vet to take a look.
