I have no idea of Johnny's age (he's a tiel). I got him from a friend of a friend, who was moving out of state and "couldn't" take him. She said she'd had him for seven years, but she had no idea how old he was and couldn't tell me anything about the home before hers.
I was off work for several days because I'm working the holiday weekend, and I noticed he takes a lot of naps during the day. I don't usually get to see him during the day because I'm at work. He took a nap yesterday afternoon and again in the early evening. None of the others did. And he actually went to sleep; he didn't just pull up one foot and doze like I've seen the others do sometimes during the afternoon. I don't suppose there's any way to make an educated guess on the age of a bird if you don't have a band and don't have a history on him, but he eats and poops normally, behaves normally, etc., so the naps make me think maybe he's older than I realize and just slowing down.

the naps make me think maybe he's older than I realize and just slowing down. That's entirely possible. George the YCA gradually slowed down in his later years, and would sleep for an hour or more every afternoon for several years.

All of mine (including Shah) take naps after breakfast, around lunch time and in the afternoon. Pippin is about 15-16 years old now but I notice that Spike (who is coming up to 4) also naps - I realise she could be copying Pippin but Shah also naps at the same time. Think it might just be an age thing with Johnny.

Mine generally get a little dozy in the afternoon, resting up for the Afternoon Squawk, when they all raise the roof for about 20 minutes, but they never seem to fully go to sleep, just kind of rest their eyes, as my dad used to say HE was doing (then why are you snoring, Dad???)

My parents' cockatiel, who is 26, has taken afternoon naps frequently for many years. I'm not sure quite how long, but I think it's been a hallmark of his personality for well over a decade, maybe longer.

Johnny does tend to kind of check out mentally if someone isn't forcing him to interact. Freddie is usually that someone. Johnny was an only bird in his former home and I don't think he got a lot of attention or let out of his cage and he certainly didn't have toys -- just one very old and worn-out toy that was rusty. So I suppose that habit of kind of shutting down is one he formed while he was there and in spite of all these years with us and a room full of noisy siblings, he still reverts a bit sometimes.
