Ok so I've been thinking of treats for my Quaker, and because I love cinnamon, I was wondering if others have given it to their birds? I've read conflicting stories about apparently two types you can buy, and only one is safe? I looked at the cinnamon at the supermarket and it doesn't list a type, just 'cinnamon'. Thanks in advance everyone

I have tried giving cinnamon sticks to Oscar and he does not like them. He doesn't mind a little cinnamon in a donut... lol. Course there is sugar and starch there too. But as long as it is only a little... it is okay.

Cinnamon is good for parrots, in moderation. You can certainly try giving your QP some cinnamon sticks and see what happens. I gave some to Ralph, and he used just one stick in one of his construction projects, then lost interest in them. Both parrots here like cinnamon toast and the occasional taste of cinnamon donut. Ceylon cinnamon is said to be best to give to parrots.

Cnyguy is right-- Ceylon cinnamon is the only kind I would personally be willing to give Cupcake. The more common kinds of cinnamon can be harmful to the liver in high and frequent doses due to a chemical called Coumarin, so I would stick to the Ceylon, which does not have this problem.
If the type of cinnamon isn't stated on the package, it's not the kind you want. It can be pretty hard to find Ceylon cinnamon sticks. I go to a local health-oriented grocery chain in my area (Mom's Organic Market), and they have it, but even similarly oriented stores (Whole Foods) don't carry it around here... It's not hard to find online, however.
