Maya is adjusting well to her harness and hoodie! We used the kaylor collar (or fred bird) harness today, which seems to irritate her feathers a bit less than the aviator harness, as it is a thinner strap, although she does get bored and start chewing on the hoodie and harness after about 20 minutes. Today, however, she pretty much ignored the hoodie and harness, said hi to the dogs, wolf whistled at joggers and shouted at the leaves falling from the trees. Here are some pics of her in her kaylor collar and her cute little blue hoodie! enjoy!

We do! Most people do a double take and lots of kids ask 'is it a real bird?' Much to my chagrin, I've also had a couple of people say 'look a pigeon!' Obviously, I have to quickly correct them. It is depressing that so many people can't tell the difference between a parrot and a pigeon, particularly when pigeons are everywhere!

It is depressing that so many people can't tell the difference between a parrot and a pigeon, particularly when pigeons are everywhere! That's funny. Many years ago, my cousin's then 4-year-old son visited my house and saw George the YCA in his cage. "Look-- a pigeon!" he said. My cousin's family lived in the city and rarely saw any other kind of birds around their house. No one has ever mistaken Ralph for a pigeon, but in the vet's waiting room, a woman sitting on the opposite side of the room asked me what kind of cat I had in the cage. Ralph's tailfeathers sticking out between the bars were plain to see, even from that distance, but apparently that woman thought he was a green cat with feathers. And I must say that Maya is a very pretty parrot.

What great pictures. I would love to take Casey out like that, but we failed at harness training...she has to settle for travel cage outings Maya is one sweet cute and smart little Quaker!

Maya is very cute!
Has she ever tried to fly off while outside in her harness?

That mischievous glint never goes away! She's never tried to fly off whilst on the harness unless something spooks her. (this time of year, it's normally a falling leaf), but unless startled, she stays put on my shoulder and says hello to passers by. All her leashes are loosely elasticated, which means she doesn't come to a sharp, painful stop. Mostly, she gets to the end of them, flies in a big loops and lands back on my shoulder. She very rarely spooks now, even when there are dogs running around nearby (though I always keep her on a short leash when this happens so she flies round and lands back on my hand rather than risk her landing on the ground.) Despite her newfound teenage strop, she is a very lovely little birdie.
