The tiels decided weeks ago that they won't sleep in their cages anymore, so now I try to shoo them onto appropriate places for sleeping at bedtime (not the chain from the hanging lamp, preferably) while Jade and Clyde still sleep in their cages and Benjy sleeps on Clyde's cage door. I gave up closing cages at all and they get up when they like and I wander in to open curtains and turn on the light whenever I get there.
One would think, in this situation, that they would also go to bed when they choose without requiring specific instructions and, indeed, the tiels do find spots they like and settle themselves in, though they generally don't actually sleep while the light is still on. They doze, at best.
Clyde, Jade and Benjy, by contrast, refuse to do that. They will not call it a day until I come in and put them to bed. As the Americans may be aware, the World Series is underway and the Cubs are in it for the first time in YEARS. I'm in Illinois, so this is a Very Big Deal, and unfortunately, I've been neglecting them in favor of cheering on the Cubs, so bedtime has gotten rather late a few nights. When I finally come in to tuck them in, I'm getting severe scoldings and annoyed birds to deal with.

With the World Series nearing its conclusion, maybe you can soon get the birds back on their usual schedule, though probably not without some grousing and grumbling over the disruption in their schedule.

I love how the different species react to bedtime. It really is amazing. I am sure they will forgive you once you get back into your routine. So happy to hear the Cubs won. I am not a sports fan but this was surely a big moment in history.

It was not easy last night cheering silently (and cussing on some occasions) in order to keep from waking up Rocky 'Too, whose cage is in the living room, or his daddy, who has to get up obscenely early for work. Rocky wasn't really asleep, but he was quiet, at least, and I wanted him to remain that way. But I did promise all the birds that last night was the last night and I would be available tonight to try to make it up to them.

Hahaha, what a conundrum! The birds will get over it, I am sure. I'm in the UK and not really a sports' fan, but I do understand what it's like when something exciting happens and you don't want to miss it! The birds may grumble for a few days, but they'll get past it. I still think you're amazing for dealing with all those crazy avian characters!
