So I'm thinking my baby Sun Conure will be ready to come home within the next week! I've yet to decide a name, however. I don't know if it's a male or female yet. That's actually a frustrating situation...the breeder agreed to do a DNA test for me for $30 extra. I assumed he was going to do it immediately so that I could be using the past 4 weeks to decide a name. But he kept putting it off, every time I'd text him asking about it he'd said "hopefully this week" or "hopefully in the next couple days". Finally a few days ago, out of frustration, I told him not to worry about it, that I'll just let my vet take care of it. He keeps saying he's been super busy setting up new pairs of birds...which is fine, but I feel as he should be putting his already paid customers as priority. But that's a whole other discussion. So, if it's a female I'm leaning towards Melisandre (Game of Thrones), but I'd call her Melly for short. I'm not 100% settled on that name, however. If it's a male, I have no idea! I'd like to avoid common Sun Conure names, such as Sunny, Skittles, Rainbow, etc. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Seems like you've found at least one name you like already. Try it out on your new Sun Conure and see what reaction you get-- parrots will often let you know if they like a name or not. Sunny may be the most common Sun Conure name, but I've run across more Greys, Amazons and Eclectus named Sunshine. You could go French with Soleil, or for a male, the Spanish for sun is Sol.

I've actually considered Soleil. I guess it's on "the list" lol.

Hmmm. I like Soleil.... Sticking with that theme Star could work, since the sun is our day star. Though once you bring your baby home, a name might just come to you when you see his or hers personality

One of the first places I look to for names is mythology. You can keep a connection without having a too-common name. For a male, Apollo, Mithras, Ra, Utu are all associated with the sun. I also like the very Roman sounding Sol Invictus.

Is this where I give away all my good names for my Quaker before he arrives? hehehe. I'm going through the same thing - only difference is I know he'll be a boy. Check out 2000-names.com. They have a HEAP of names from all different languages (including native American) and a section on names that mean certain things too. I've gotten quite a few on my list from there

Any name decisions? I'm assuming the baby hasn't come home yet? Edit: I read the other thread and saw that he has indeed come home! Very exciting!

I always give my critters people names, but what I do is make a list of names I like and try them out on the bird/dog in question. I had a basset named George. I really wanted to call him Eeyore but when I tried that on him, he turned his back to me. I tried other names on the list and he wouldn't turn around or even look at me. I said "George" and he turned around and wagged his tail. Couldn't be more obvious than that! Similarly, when I was driving Freddie home from the bird fair where he got me, he was in a box so I couldn't see him, but I tried a couple of names and got absolute silence until I said "Freddie," and he chirped. Ringo Starling was presented to me as a boy from the wildlife rehab center, but they admitted they weren't sure. So I suggested (to Ringo) the name Paddy/Patty, figuring it sounds the same and we could figure out the spelling once we knew. Ringo refused that decidedly. When I said Ringo, she was very agreeable, so Ringo it is and she turned out to be female. Birds have very strong opinions.
