Hi All, just joined and currently have Echo (green quaker) Steve (blue quaker) babies now about 8 months old. They are just starting to mumble some words and make kisses and I have to admit their little growls are the cutest thing ever.
Echo sadly has developed a scarily bad self mutilation habit and is currently collared which was a horrible experience to go through! not sure if anyone else has experienced this in such a young bird but our vet is not optimistic for her long term
We also have a young Indian ringneck (Bonnie), she has no issues talking, its getting her to stop that's hard. my mobile phone case is covered in beak marks and I have learnt quickly not to ignore my Fids and try to talk on the phone- how rude of me. Lastly we have a little lovebird (chicken) and since Spring has arrived rather early here this year she is seeming to resemble a rather spiky porcupine with all her pinnies at the moment the poor thing.
Has been great reading through all of your tales and stories and these little birds rather quickly become part of the family.

Hi Peta, welcome. Our 9-mth blue quaker is named Bonnie! Yes, Fids are classic attention-seekers and Bonnie hates it when my hubby & I talk to each other or on the phone. She squawks non-stop if we dare ignore her for even a minute (unless she initiates the 'ignoring' of course, either to preen or stuff her face). Hope someone can give you some good advice re your poor Echo.

Hi PETA, et al. I sure am sorry to read about Echo's self-mutilation. There's so much yet to learn about parrots and how to provide the best environment for them. My CAG plucked for a couple years, but it never progressed to bare skin. Have you gone the antidepressant route with her? Just curious. Some people with CAGs have resorted to this, with mixed results.

thanks, Echo is currently on Prozac, which we didn't want to do as if you start them on drugs young they may need them forever! we have the next vet appointment next week so hopefully she can come off the drugs. we have been experimenting with some home made collar options that are nicer than the hard plastic the vet used though. poor baby is missing feathers at the back of her head now too! in the good news though her clipped wings have grown enough that she can get around and is taking every opportunity to show off her flight skills. it must feel so good for them to fly!

Welcome to the forum Peta, you sound like you have a fun busy house. I hope Echo can start to improve, maybe the flying around will cheer her up.
