Ollie with only Zupreem Banana pellets in the fruit bag we've tried other brands but he doesn't like them and I can't find Rodybush anywhere. Can you make pellets? I'm wondering because I make chop and honey sticks and I have a lot of cooking and baking ingredients. Also I'm wondering if they would be better for him.

Hi Hannah, you probably can but I genuinely don't know how. Also, it's quite hard to get the balance right. Have you tried taking the banana pellets out and just giving him the rest? If he gets hungry enough, he will likely try them. Also, even just the banana pellets will have a good blend of vitamins and minerals, so try not to let it worry you too much, and if you are making chops, Ollie will be getting lots of other important nutrients. Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but honey is not good for parrots, as far as I know, as their stomach acid is not sufficient to break it down. Parrots that eat flowers tend to process the nectar raw. When bees process the nectar into honey, they do so using chemicals that parrot stomachs aren't prepared to break down. A little will probably not be too bad, but I'd be careful about feeding honey regularly. You might be able to find recipes to make parrot pellets online. I found this one: www.cookingforparrots.com/category/pellets/ it has honey in it, which I'd cut out and replace with water to form the edible adhesive, but it's up to you. Hope this helps.

I think it might be difficult to come up with exactly the right recipe to make good nutritionally-balanced pellets. You might try experimenting with other brands-- see if you can find Higgins InTune or Pretty Bird Daily Select pellets. Ralph likes both of those, especially the Higgins pellets. You could also try soaking some of the pellets to soften them-- soak a few in good quality water or unsweetened fruit juice and offer them. This often works well with parrots who are either unused to eating the dry pellets or are reluctant to eat them. It's interesting that Ollie prefers the yellow pellets-- it seems that lots of parrots will eat everything but those. Ralph will only eat them if I break them up into smaller pieces.
