Clyde's been testy lately about Johnny sitting on me and having his head scritched. I thought it was Johnny sitting there that was the problem, but the other night, Johnny was sitting on a perch and I just spoke to him, using his name, and Clyde had the same reaction. He made that sound he makes when he's mad and chomped the back of my neck. I've been experimenting, and I've spoken to Jade, Freddie and Benjy using their names and he doesn't get mad, or at least, not THAT mad. He grumps, but doesn't make that sound and doesn't attack the back of my neck.
I can only conclude that he not only objects to Johnny, but knows who "Johnny" is. Do your other birds know each other's names? I've suspected mine do for a long while. They look in the same direction as the bird in question if I speak to another bird, but I'm looking that way, so I thought it was possible they were just copying me. Now I think this is proof that they really do know each other's names.

I've been working on getting Ralph and Scooter to address each other by name, with no results so far-- but I think that they do know each other's names by now. They hear me often enough calling them both by name and talking to each of them about the other parrot (as in "Scooter needs her water changed too" or "Look at Ralph-- he's building with his sticks").

Oh yeah - Shah screams Pippin's name frequently. If I say Pippin's name, Shah screams at me - if I sing the name, Shah doesn't mind. He now refers to any cockatiel as Pippin (who he hates). I am not allowed to touch or speak to Pippin without Shah throwing a hissy fit.

Rocky definitely also knows the dogs' names and our names. He probably doesn't know the other birds' names because we keep them apart.

Siobhan... I believe you are correct and your birds do know each others names. They are so smart. Oscar knows my husbands' name and my name so I am sure the birds know each others names as well.
I get bit when I say my husband's name... lol... Oscar doesn't like him much cause he takes time away from him.
Such smarty pants they are.

Since they all know their own names, I'm pretty sure they know everyone else's too. They even recognize nicknames. The lovebird brothers are probably the least cognitive, but they do respond to their own names. The lovebird hen, Lovey, is just plain scary smart. Sort of a feathered version of a Lhasa Apso.
Not so sure about the people, but the quakers do know our son, Thomas. But then, Thomas is special because when he visits from AZ ONCE A FREAKIN' YEAR, Otey & Aldo literally beat each other up for his attention. It's hysterical--even if I'm on the phone with him & use his name, they'll start in. Calling for him by name, asking where he's going, telling him to come here, kissy noises, the works. So they definitely know HE is. Must be nice...

Casey definitely knows names too, I only have the finches and not another parrot but when my grandson is visiting she always calls out hi papa to my OH. She knows that is the name he hears when he is here.

I know I have mentioned this before but it is cute so I'll mention it again. Oscar will not turn to look at me if I call his name.... but if I say... does Oscar wants peas??? He sure beats it over to me fast like... lol

Yup, Chewy definitely knows Taz. I don't know for sure if Taz knows Chewy. I don't know if either of them know Phoenix. :-)

My budgie knows the others' names. He's a pistol. He can mimic every bird in the house and say tons of words, but he does a lot of budgie trills and chirps in between the words, so you have to really pay attention. He basically never shuts up. LOL

My budgies know eachothers name and Ollie's name. Ollie only says their names if their fighting but most of the time he just calls my name.

I find this really amazing and I truly believe that birds can learn/know names. There is so much we don't know about the intelligence of these creatures. Imagine if humans and animals could communicate without any limitations of physical structure...it blows my mind!
