Hey guys, sorry I haven't been around lately. Still trying to get in the hang of working night shifts and maintaining some social interactions, and trying to stay on the good side of a currently grumpy parrot! So Yoshi has been molting (why he's currently grumpy). He's gotten in two new flight feathers on each wing, I've been watching them closely and I'm a little concerned by some white lines along the edges of them. I was hoping maybe it would go away, but he's had the feathers for a couple weeks now and they are still there. He was clipped when I got him from the breeder, so I'm unsure of exactly what the new feathers should look like. I do plan on getting him in to the vet for a checkup within the next month (he hasn't been since the day after I brought him home, December 1st 2015). But in the meantime I wanted to post and see if you guys had any feedback. Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, not sure. Casey is already in bed for the night... So I can't compare. I hope you are getting used to the night shifts even if yoshi hadn't quite figured it all out yet. It must be hard though.

How is his diet? Feather abnormalities are usually either stress or diet related. That said, I'm not familiar with this abnormality, so it might not be that kind of issue. Cupcake had one yellow feather at one point and that seemed to have little to no significance... so who knows.

His diet for the most part is pretty good. He always has Harrison's High Potency Fine in his cage, and eats a good amount of it. I feed him peppers from the garden, frozen peas, green beans, and corn. I've been giving him a strawberry every other day for the past couple weeks. He gets a pumpkin seed each morning when I put him in his cage so I can go to sleep. He gets maybe 5-6 safflower seeds of the evening after I get up.
Tho for the past month or so we've both been eating some junk. I've been having things like pizza, and give him pieces of crust.
Stress is a big possibility. With him never knowing when I put him to bed if I'm leaving that night or not, and him having to keep himself entertained during the day, when just 2 months ago I was here with him all the time. And when I'm off, I'm up all night being noisey. Tho I'm not sure if that really bothers him, as he never makes a peep as long as I keep the lights off. If I have to turn the lights on, I'm allowed approximately two minutes before he lets me know he's not happy. His timing is pretty accurate too, lol!
Definitely gonna get him into the vet soon, cause now I'm a little worried.

They don't look like stress bars. By the way, stress for a bird is not really how we conceive of it, and is most often linked to a period of hunger or malnutrition. I looked through my collection of Peppy feathers and found some flights with the same pattern. I hesitate to use him to illustrate what is normal, but if you look at some of the Quaker pictures here, you can see several that seem to show the same pattern. Look about halfway down: www.dreamstime.com/photos-images/quaker-parrot.htmlI think what you're seeing is pretty common, and you shouldn't get too stressed about it. (Who needs stress bars?) I'll be interested to see what your vet says.

Thanks easttex, that makes me feel better. Wish I coulda got an appointment a bit sooner, but working around my schedule and the schedule of the vet (she's only at that facility like 2 days a week) isn't easy!

Diet sounds pretty good. I doubt he has any major malnutrition from that... I think Easttex is probably right, it probably is a normal variation in feathers. Vet visit can't hurt though.

From what everyone says it's probably ok. I checked caseys this morning and though I didn't see it at first. I too found some feathers I had saved with some white on the edges
Glad you are both getting into a routine Hope you get a few days off at a time to enjoy the sunshine.

Just wanted to let you know that Bonnie's flight feathers have white edging on them...never noticed before reading your post, but she seems happy enough, so hopefully it means nothing.

Maya's have a lighter edge too, though she's grey so it's not as easy to spot. She also has white tips on her tail feathers. Sometimes this can be an individual thing in birds, a bit like a person's finger print. I agree with the other that a vet visit won't hurt but if he's eats and pooping fine it's unlikely to be all that serious. Best of luck and let us know what the vet says!

The white edging is perfectly normal. It's more visible in certain light conditions, and when seen from different angles. It seems to be more pronounced on some QPs, but is present to some degree on most Quakers.

You know, I was looking at Cupcake earlier and realized that she has it too.
