I can understand why you feel weird about the hoodie, although it sounds like it will be extremely cute. We'll definitely need to see photos of that. Lots of exciting developments for Maya! Sounds like things are going very well!

I totally understand your aversion to dressing our birds like they're children....although I have to admit that the way we speak to Bonnie is as if she's a child. I've read that parrots' understanding of human words rivals at least that of a 3-yo human (is that right?). However, dressing Maya in the hoodie will accomplish the goal of protecting the harness, right? So...may as well help her look funky while you're at it!

Hahaha, thanks guys. There's no doubt it will be adorable, and biteybird, I also talk to Maya as if she's a child. She seems to like it and chirps back at me, fluffing up her feathers. I think you're right, that if it is used in the right way to accomplish a goal, I'm not overstepping the mark. She won't be wearing it in the house (what's the point? she has feathers!) and will only be wearing it in an inside environment if she is also required to wear her harness in said environment. I guess the most important thing is my attitude towards her. She's a bird, and this plan will help her to be outside, experiencing the wide world as safely as possible...it just so happens it will also be adorable! I'll see if I can get some photos when it arrives!

I'm looking forward to pics of Maya dressed up, and hearing of how she takes to it!
I admire your determination to get Maya outside as much as possible, in the safest way possible!

Thanks Zim She really is getting there, and she does enjoy the walks and the fresh air. She's no longer scared of the sky, which is great, and she calls at bike riders and joggers and squeal-barks at dogs. It's very cute. Hoodie hasn't arrived yet, still feeling a bit weird about it but I'm determined to give it a try to keep her harness safe from that beak of hers!

Lol so cute! Does she leave the beads and strings alone? Yoshi would be chewing on those non stop!

VERY cute! She almost looks like a little tame vampire bird (with the red-lined cape). No offence intended!

Hahaha, a little vampire bird! I'm tempted to photoshop some fangs onto that pic! Zim, she does chew the strings and beads, but that's what they're for, so she doesn't chew on the lining of the hoodie. It doesn't always work, but it does give her something to get distracted by. Hopefully I'll get a pic of her in the blue one soon!

That is too funny.... it reminds me of the dogs that are dressed up but I have never seen a bird dressed up. Soooooo cute.

Thanks all. This hoodie is too big for her and she keeps getting her feet caught in it, which is quite stressful for her. She's worn it once but I've decided not to use it again as it is restrictive for her. Her blue harness is a far better fit and much shorter so her legs don't get caught in it. She does still chew on the hood a little bit but mostly, she actually seems fairly comfortable with it. I'm taking her out for a walk tomorrow to test the hoodie over her kaylor collar harness, so will take some snaps to share!

How old was Maya when you started training to harness? Iwould like to do it but Pidge won't even let me play with his wings. I won't be able to let him fly outside because the wild birds would take him. ID love to take him for walks and to visit friends.

i have the video for the harness and have started lifting his wings for the count of three. He chews at me the whole time. He picked up the harness and flew away with it. Took ages to find it hanging on the back of a curtain.
