My budgies do too but now he says "Yummy yummy?" Which is what he says when he wants a treat, I don't give him the food I'm eating unless if it's fruit, vegetables, or Cheerios that are out of the box but only once a week for Cheerios. It's just I feel really guilty when he begs b/c he bows his head and climbs down and says "Yummy Yummy" and all I want to do is give him some, I won't b/c I know human food is bad for parrots. What can I do to get him intrested in his food & other things I give him. He even throws his apple slice if I have chicken fingers so I'm worried he might go on a eating strike if he continues this. How can I make his fruits and veggies more intresting? I give him bird treats.

Hi My Blue is quite the begger also!!
I try not to eat in front of him unless it's food I can give him. I do find he only eats like 10% of a snack I might give him so it's not a big deal if I choose to give him a little bite. He loves pine nuts so I offer him that instead of my food--if I eat around him. I think it's a social thing to dine with me! They seem to have excellent vision and know exactly whats goin on in the kitchen😃

You might try including some extra things on your plate just so you can share them with Ollie, and let him see that you're eating them (along with your own food that you're not sharing ) and maybe he'll be content if you let him have some of those things. Chicken is OK to feed a parrot now and then-- plain baked chicken is best, since a lot of seasonings and fried foods aren't good for birds-- so if you're eating that, Ollie can share a bit. Both my parrots expect some chicken or turkey when I have it to eat.

I always add a little something to my plate for Ducky. His cage is in the dining room and eating as a flock is very important to him. He gets very excited when the table starts getting set. He gets his "dinner" on top of his cage and is not allowed at the table with us. But we are so close, he seems ok with that. But I add unseasoned vegetables to my plate. My BF started doing that too after Ducky started begging from him as well, not satisfied with what I was offering him apparently. His cage is in the dining room as it's most central to the lower level of the house. He can see into the kitchen and living room both from there and gets to observe all the "action" so never feels left out. He joins us in both rooms when appropriate. But I think dinner time is his favorite time.

I would not be able to stand it if I was eating and Oscar wasn't helping himself to my plate. There is no food on my plate that he should not have and most of the things I do not want him to eat... he doesn't like them anyway and won't eat it. I would not be shy to allow your Quaker to try some of your food. Oscar would (at first) try to stand on my plate so I hold him with my left finger and put some of my food in my left hand. I have become quite good at eating with one hand now... lol. (Little messy when I am having a hamburger or sandwich but we manage.) He always has to have little bites of my bread but will leave all the rest alone.
Of course tonight is spaghetti night so Oscar will be in his glory. Noodles and parmesan cheese.... he loves it just as much as I do.

Maya often eats off my plate too, she shares my fruit and fibre in the morning (whole grain, obvs) and has the odd bit of pasta in her bowl whenever I'm making it. She doesn't have anything that has extra salt added to it, and if I'm eating anything she can't have, I put a couple of nutriberries in her bowl. She loves them, so this usually keeps her occupied!

Bonnie loves it when I'm preparing food on the kitchen bench. She flies down to survey what's on offer. I usually just "happen" to have a little bit of each ingredient lying closest to her (which successfully diverts her attention from the main attraction). This satisfies her need to steal food - which, let's face it, is far more fun than being given bits in a bowl.
So, Hannah, maybe Ollie will be more interested in fruit and veg if he thinks he's stealing it from your plate (?)...you could sit pretending to eat it all and say "yummy yummy".

If I want to get through a meal in peace without screaming the whole time, I have to give Max some food. He's not shy about scoping out my plate, I just make sure he's not going for something he can't have. It's funny how so many Quakers want our dinner!

Both parrots here get their dinner just before I'm ready to sit down to eat mine. They're both contentedly eating their own food, inside their respective cages, long enough for me to get a few mouthfuls of food without being interrupted by squeaks, squawks and boops. I always set aside a few "extra" things to feed the birds while I'm eating my food (which isn't always parrot-appropriate ). Ralph likes to sit on the outside of his cage while I'm getting their food ready, but Scooter doesn't think that's an appropriate time to be out of her cage and stays inside. As soon as dinner's ready, in Ralph goes to start stuffing his beak. I suspect if I let either of them out at dinnertime, I'd never get a bite of food myself.

I'll try that. Lately I've been eating across from him with a side of either fruits or veggies and I'll give him some and show I'm eating them too.

My Pidge has started taking an interest in my food preparation. When I have breakfast and have my boring bran and milk he likes to participate and gets about 3 sticks of bran which he loves. He's started stealing food off a plate if I don't watch him.

One thing about quakers is that they have absolutely NO shame! When I have caught Bonnie doing something naughty red-handed she blinks guiltily for just a second or two, then resumes without a care in the world.

Ollie does puppy eyes when he gets in trouble. The other day he tried to steal broccoli that I had just put in my mouth.

Lady loves to share food with me as well. However, my husband absolutely hates this, so if he is eating something, Lady isn't where he can get to his food. If it is just me and my daughters though, she is free to roam and take whatever she wants. None of us mind it. And if it isn't something that is safe for her to eat, then we will give her a nutri-berry or a spinach leaf to eat instead. I find nothing wrong with "sharing" my food with Lady (and Pat too). Both love to eat what we eat and drink what we drink. We try to keep it to healthy foods and snacks, both for our health and our birds. They love chicken and will go crazy (especially Lady) when we are having spaghetti. Popcorn is a favorite snack, but it is given in very limited quantities. Lady's absolute favorite thing, even though she really shouldn't have it (and I didn't mean to start it. It was an unintentional accident) is coffee. I was having a cup of coffee one morning and I was almost finished and I had to get up to do something and when I turned back around, Lady had climbed onto my cup and was upside down licking the very bottom of it! There was only a drop or two left in the cup, so she didn't even get a beakful, but now, I have to make sure that my coffee cups have lids on them because she will be on top of them in a heart beat, trying to get her drink of coffee! Even though she really doesn't get any, she has sit on my cup and lick the top of it every morning while I do my computer work before I leave for my office. We have our "coffee" together. But she has to do that with me every morning. I love it though.

That is cute jenwade.... but I just want to mention be very careful of the coffee because I have seen pictures of what a Quaker Parrot looks like when they have been allowed coffee... and trust me.. it is a sad sight. Maybe when you have your coffee you can give her a little unsweetened fruit juice like... apple. Most Quakers do like a little lick.
Also this book I have mentions that it can be toxic.
Just trying keep all the little ones healthy.
