As I've posted before, the relationship between Cupcake and my stepdaughter has been very minimal over the years... partially by design, but also because neither of them seemed to be totally ready for it. But for the past several months, Cupcake has been consistently giving her little kisses on the lips when she is nearby. Beyond that, there has been nothing. Fast forward to a few days ago, when my stepdaughter got back home from spending 2 weeks with her Dad... She has never been gone this long, so I guess Cupcake was very happy to see her return home, and was suddenly extremely affectionate! And my stepdaughter also seems to have become less afraid of Cupcake somehow? For the first 30 minutes after she came home, Cupcake was curled up under her chin while she sat on the couch... periodically grooming her gently, but mostly just sitting there all fluffed up. It was very sweet. There's certainly a piece of me that's a bit nervous to have Cupcake so close to her face, but Cupcake has never given us a reason to think she would attack a face, or really even spontaneously attack anything at all... It's not something she does. I think it's time to let them build a relationship (I guess that's already happening). As long as we've had Cupcake, my stepdaughter has been frustrated that everyone else got to hold and snuggle the bird and she couldn't... so now she is getting her chance, and she is overjoyed about it.

It does sound like your stepdaughter and Cupcake are well on their way to becoming good friends.

This is so cute! I think, as long as your stepdaughter is able to build a solid relationship with cupcake, without being nervous of her, there is no reason why they shouldn't snuggle! This is really adorable.

There is nothing like that first realization that you are the object of a bird's affection. Very special.

Definitely. And Easttex, you're totally right... my stepdaughter has been clearly very touched to realize just how much Cupcake missed her and loves her. It has been extremely sweet to watch

The 'changing affection' thing is really interesting. Just last week Bonnie decided she preferred my husband to me for a few days & I was really relieved (as it meant she wasn't biting him), but at the same time I missed being the favourite!

Yeah, I'm always wondering if or when Cupcake will do the changing preferences thing, but she seems to just love everyone... to varying degrees, of course, but she's definitely not neglecting anyone because she's chosen someone specific. I guess she has in the past though, so maybe she's just through that phase (is it a phase?).

Hey Aaron, I'm just wondering...nearly one month since you started this thread, is Cupcake still being nice to your stepdaughter? Just curious!

She is still nice to her, but that was definitely a bit of a fling. I think my stepdaughter lacks the patience to really want to sit still long enough to relate to Cupcake, and Cupcake isn't as motivated to relate to my stepdaughter... But she still gives her kisses on the regular. That's about it for now, though.
