We had a huge storm last night, flooded roads, trees down, the works, and it included a power outage on the whole side of town I live on. I was at work when it went out, so I came home to a dark house and a husband trying to make supper by the light of a miniature battery powered lantern and eight birds who had all been out of their cages. I found the regular battery lantern for Hubby, took a flashlight and tried to locate the birds to get them properly into their cages. Clyde, Jade, Johnny and Ringo had all found their way into their cages and gotten onto their sleepy perches, though both Clyde and Ringo had some choice comments to make for Mommy letting the lights all go out so suddenly like that. Of course it was all MY fault.
Maggie and Greta were both on top of Maggie's cage and more than a little freaked out. Freddie was on Greta's cage, loaded for bear. He did the wings-spread-and-hiss routine when I came in the room. Benjy was huddled against Jade's cage and one of her toys, scared out of his little budgie mind, poor dear. He didn't give me the slightest argument when I poked his little self into his cage. Greta hissed at me and she never hisses at me, but I finally got them all in their cages and tucked in for the night. It was way early, but one little lantern isn't enough light for birds to be anything but asleep or petrified, so going to bed was the best option for them. Poor Ringo flatly went into panic mode when I went into her room with the little light to tuck her in. She was okay by this morning and sat on my shoulder while I dried my hair and she also took my eye shadow applicator and played keepaway with it.

Poor things! (and poor you). I'm glad that all is well and back to normal...whatever that is.

Hope that everybody has recovered from the upsetting experience of the power outage. That can be very frightening to birds. The only time Ralph has ever had a panic attack was when the power went out at night and the apartment was completely dark. That's when I replaced the standard nightlight with one that has a battery backup. Since then, the only power outages here have been in the daytime.

They're all fine and were fairly well-behaved last night when I spent time with them. Greta's a little clingier than usual, but I'm not sure that's related. She's recently decided to contest Clyde's position as Chief Bird and tries to beat him to my head when I come in so I have to speak to and greet her first. Clyde is not pleased. And Jade is demanding hair preening privileges and has even begun to preen and not just pull, and that also confuses Clyde and annoys him. We had my brother over for dinner last night and he was highly amused to learn that I can't wear my contacts or my new glasses into the birds' room because Clyde will not be pleased, and that I have to choose my clothes based on Clyde's preferences, at least when I'm going to be with Clyde. Of course my brother's known me all my life and should realize his sister is a nut job, but apparently he didn't realize quite how MUCH of a nut job. LOL However, this is the same brother who installed a wheel and food and water dishes in a closet in a former home so the mice would benefit. Not pet mice. Wild mice. I'd be over there and hear "ka-squeak, ka-squeak, ka-squeak" and it would be the house mice using that wheel he got for them.

Siobhan, have you learnt nothing? You simply cannot displease Clyde! It sounds as though Jade & Clyde will have 'words' soon. As for your brother, he's just a softie for 'sentient beings'

But Clyde keeps adding things to the already-enormous list of things that displease him. I can't keep up.

Well then, you should be doing things that please him. I am wondering if you need an attitude adjustment. Clyde is trying to impress on you Rule No. 1 - he is King and Boss of All Humans, Birds, Dogs, Fish and Snails. Just remember your place on the ladder of life - it is on the bottom step and Clyde is on the top step. Now stop upsetting that poor, defenceless quaker.

Last night, I pulled the footstool over so I could sit eye to eye with Jade on her "front porch" and visit. Jade wanted to preen my hair and chuck me on the chin and bob her head, and Clyde flew over to put a stop to it. He hissed at her, and she backed up but then she came back. I told him that he needs to be friends with Jade and he said, and I quote, "Dammit." LOL I'll take that as a "no." However, he did allow Jade and me to have some girl talk while he preened, as long as she respected HIS personal space.

I am surprised that he allowed you and Jade to have some girl talk. Shah goes ballistic if I even dare to look at Pippin and Spike. They really are little green bullies full of self importance.

I agree, they have no lack of self-esteem! It's remarkable how quickly they become attuned (even as youngsters) to the fact they can train us humans to be their slaves.
