I was sitting at the table with my BF's aunt having breakfast. Ducky was on his cage top munching on some veggies and fruit. I laughed at something Auntie said and heard an echo. We looked at each other and then at Ducky. "Did he just laugh?" I asked. "I think so," she said. So I laughed again. Echo. We both cracked up and applauded him and he laughed along with us. Other than his very garbled "step up" (which he tries to repeat everytime one of us says it) and "yum yum" (again only when we say it to get him to eat something new or when offering a treat), this was his first new vocalization that was not strictly quaker speak. I thought it would take longer (he's only 3 months), but apparently I laugh a lot!

Aww! That must be such a thrilling moment! Starry also attempts Step Up and also once tried to say Hello. I think she also laughed once or twice but I am not sure.
That sounds so precious though!

I absolutely love the Quaker laugh. It is one of the most theraputic things about having them. It can be contagious

That's great; well done, Ducky! You obviously have one smart little quaker there. It's a fantastic feeling when your bird comes up with something new to show you. Bonnie does great laughing noises. I especially like the ones that sound as though she's a crazy witch (we got that going after we were watching Sharknado and she was copying the women screaming when they got eaten by the sharks).

It is so awesome to hear them laugh, I love it when Normy laughs... it sometimes even feels like he does it in context haha
Normy has a great witch laugh too, which has slowly started to make me paranoid, I am starting to worry thats what my laugh sounds like... hehe

My grey has a really weird laugh. It sounds maniacal, and she makes the sound of deep noisy breaths at the end of a cycle. My husband refers to it as another episode of Bird Asylum. I know she didn't learn it from me.

Did you know that the laugh from a Quaker is also one of their bonding techniques. Almost all Quakers will laugh when you laugh it is like they cannot help themselves. You know they think highly of you when they laugh along.

Starry only laughs when she bored. She was sitting on her perch a few minutes ago eyeing me and she started laughing.

That's too cute! Maya laughs too, but currently there are no other words or phrases. Sometimes I think she's trying to say 'hello', but it doesn't happen often, she doesn't really seem to be a talker. I don't mind, though, there's PLENTY else about her that's adorable, lovable and interesting. It annoys me a little bit that it's the first question people ask about her, but I guess that's just people who don't know parrots. If I say to them 'no, she doesn't talk, but she has been known to steal pasta from my plate, scuttle to the top of her play stand and munch on it whilst laughing at me in my laugh...' or 'no, but she does hang upside down off her rope wheel and flap her wings like a maniac if she feels she's being ignored...' I tend to get looked at like I am insane. Oh well, their loss!

So far, I haven't gotten the "does he talk" question about Ducky. I used to get it about my macaw a lot, but my answer was always,"only when she wants to, and only for those she knows well and considers family." It was amazing how many people would try to prove me wrong and start annoying her by getting too close and jabbering at her. She would scare them with her T-Rex impersonation and they would back off. I think Ducky would laugh at that! I sure did. And I would find Maya absolutely adorable!

Beccilouise, I can relate As I've said before, Cupcake is not a talker. And people definitely ask if she talks often. I usually say "no, but she laughs!"... and then go on to explain that not all parrots choose to talk. But, like you with Maya, we're totally enamored with this bird. She's such a character and there are no words needed to experience her huge personality. Other people don't always get that though. But whatever, as you said, their loss
