I just have to tell you this as it is kind of funny. I had a huge infection in my sinuses a few months ago and was on an antibiotic drip for a spell.
Anyway... I knew I had this wisdom tooth very high in my gums and mentioned that it might be part of the problem. After all kinds of X rays... they said I needed to see a Dental surgeon or an ears, nose and throat specialist. I saw both. The dental surgeon would not touch me because he said the tooth was actually inside my nasal cavity. Inside the bone structure.
The nose specialist said he would do surgery and hopefully remove it without too much damage. He had never done or seen this type of situation before but would do his best. If he could not reach the tooth through my nose, then he would have to go in through my gums and lift my face off to cut through the sinus cavity to reach the tooth.
I was very nervous going under... the side effects that they warned me of were very scary. One being I could end up with double vision that the Dr. said... most patients would rather be blind that have double vision. I could have lost nerves in my face leaving one side droopy... I could loose the eye ducts and have dry eye... and the list goes on.
Anyway.. he does the surgery and drills a hole inside my nose through the sinus (the tooth is 1/4 inch below my right eye). He found tools from other types of surgeries that he used to pull the tooth out... and he got it out through my nose. Just flippin amazing. The tooth is the size of a molar tooth with one large root and apparently has been there since I was born. I never had wisdom teeth so I guess I had one that was not located where it was suppose to be.
Strange... but very true. I came out with no side effects whatsoever. Not even a bruise or swelling... nothing. Felt fine the next day and even had a vodka to celebrate. lol.... I gave the Dr. $50.00 gift certificate for coffee because he did such an amazing job. wooo woooo... anybody else ever have a tooth pulled out through their nose... lmaoooo.... I don't think so.

Wow Julianna I've never heard of anything remotely similar to that. I'd have been more worried about the fact that the doctor had never done a procedure like this or even heard of it before.

Glad to hear that you made it through all that safe and sound. I actually also had a tooth that was growing above the gumline, working its way up toward my nose. It was removed way back when I was 9 years old. After reading what you just went through, I'm happy that it was discovered and taken care of then and not later in my life.

Such an intriguing subject line. Your story nearly floored me, Julianna. I was thinking "here's one for the medical journals", and then I read Gary's account. What are the odds that two people on a smallish forum like this have undergone the same strange procedure?!

Thanks all... I did a follow up and Doc says I am fine. In six more months I will see him again and then he will discharge me. He somehow feels that the infection was not caused by this tooth... so... time will tell I guess.
You are a great bunch of caring people... thank you again.

I still remember something my dentist said back then (he had quite a sense of humor)-- he told me I was on my way to showing that unicorns aren't just creatures in fairy tales. I don't think he quoted any odds, but the oral surgeon who removed the offending tooth said that an extra tooth, growing upward above the gum line, is very rare. I guess it is something unique to have two of us show up in the same place like this.

OK, next government-funded study coming up - 'Correlations between teeth problems and the psyche of parrot ownership' (or "Damn my teeth ache; I must go and buy a quaker parrot").
