Hello for those of you who don't remember me my name is Ariel and I have been a member here since before the site moved.
I don't have a bird myself but I volunteer at a pet store near me in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
I find myself getting easily attached to many birds there and at other pet stores I visit. It's kind of a hobby of mine to go around to the local stores while I'm traveling and visit with all their birds.
I'm going to just introduce several of the birds that I have met, known, and become friends with here.
So first there's Dingo who was a Quaker Parrot 3-4 years old. He was surrendered to the pet store I volunteer at and was fairly cage aggressive and sort of cranky. Apparently he would bite people for kind of no reason according to a worker. But he never bit me so accept for cage aggression. Other than that he was a very nice bird and was eventually adopted by a lady looking for another Quaker after hers passed away.
After Dingo found a new home two other birds came to the pet store from a man whose wife had severe asthma. One was a black capped caique named Tango and the other was an African Gray named Thor Bird. Thor was very strongly bonded to one man who worked there and did not particularly like women so I was not able to take him out a lot of the time unless he was taken put by his chosen person. After a while he did not work there anymore so sadly Thor was not taking out as much except for when the man visited. Tango was the sassiest bird I've ever met. He was very beaky and nippy. He liked to rub his head all over my shoulder and loved his head scratches. He would bob his head and say stinker bird and then make a fart noise xD.He liked to be flipped over on his back hanging on to my finger and then slid on his back across the counter. He was quite a talker especially for a caique and said stinker bird, pretty bird step up, whistled and once after I picked a bit of lint out of his beak he said thank you. Thor once said watch out when a budgie got loose in the bird room.
Eventually both of them found homes Thor with a husband and wife who had certainly done their research and came into the store many times, Tango with a lady he bit on the nose. Of course.
A little while after that a cockatiel came into the store who had been kept for 12 years in a very small cage woth soaking wet paper on the bottom when he came into the store. He was fed exclusively kaytee seed diet which is honestly not much better than the store provides. (Because it is too expensive apparently) He was named Chong and he had never had his wings or nails trimmed and was also very underweight, about 80 grams. I took him to the vet at my own expense. They found that his wing joint that connects from the breastbone up to the wing was very loose allowing it to move up and around farther than normal, causing him not to be able to build up as much muscle in his chest. Because he could not properly flap around, he was actually underweight. He began to eat more with the food dish positioned higher but found a home when I was not in the store - I didn't get to meet the new owners.
More later on Bob the quaker and a couple of amazons! This has taken forever to type!
