As you all know, I am moving into my very own property in less than 2 weeks' time. It has been completely renovated inside. I have had an eco carpet put down so it is a mixture of fibres, is very long wearing and tough. The thing is, the house remains closed up so I cant air it properly until I move in. The smell of the new carpet is very strong and am worried that it will affect the birds. I can pop them in the laundry for a little while but you can smell the carpet there as well. Should I be worried or not? Any advice you guys can give me will be appreciated.

I'd be worried, too. New carpets and pads and the adhesives used are known for putting out VOCs. If yours is supposed to be eco-friendly, I would contact the manufacturer of the carpet and ask about them. They probably don't know much about the effect on birds, but if they could provide some detail, your vet could probably advise. The rest of it is probably harder to track down, but maybe your installer could provide some information on the pad and adhesive. I know you needed one more thing to worry about.

Sorry, Jan, I know nothing about carpet as we have wood floors. I think Easttex' suggestions of ringing the manufacturer and vet are good. Less than 2 weeks away, now? Wow! Is your new place still in NSW or another state?

Still in NSW - between Lithgow and Bathurst. I have been reading about carpets and know what to do before the birds move in. Will be going there on Saturday to start the ball rolling. Thanks guys for your help. BTW, rang the vet this arvo and they said he is chatting to a blue quaker who will be there for a couple of days and is eating a little bit.

At least he has some *decent* company! (I mean in the absence of his one and only love - you). No doubt about Shah, he's one tough little birdie. Your property will be great and I bet you are looking forward to the change of location and pace.

Please share your technique, Jan! When I had carpet replaced with vinyl flooring in the bird room, I wouldn't let them use adhesive except at one seam. They swore the stuff was low or no VOC, but I trust very few when it comes to my birds.

Yeah, I would be cautious. The others give good advice. Don't want to mess around when it comes to any sort of fumes.
We had to use a solvent to get up carpet tape (a lot of it) when replacing a rug the other day and despite the fact that Cupcake was asleep behind a closed door and the HVAC was not running so air was not circulating, we were still incredibly paranoid and stayed up late airing the apartment out.

Hi everyone, I am going to delay the move by another 2 weeks which will give me time to pop up to the house and open it up for a few hours a couple of times a week. I will pop fans around to help move the air plus will put a few plants around the place. Don't think my friends who are moving me are going to be very pleased with the delay but, for peace of mind, I want to make sure that the birds will be okay and it will give me more time to get the place set up.

That's a sensible solution, Jan-- and it will undoubtedly be healthier for you, as well as the birds, to get your new home aired out before you move in.

I bet you are so excited to move... I am glad to hear you are waiting to air out the house first... never too safe. Good luck and let us know how it goes... and share your knowledge on what you find out about the rugs okay? Thanks

I was at the house today and the new carpet smell has dramatically decreased. It was really windy so opened up everything and got some good cross breezes. It should be fine by the time I move. Got to get their room sorted - who goes where and what will be put in there as well as new curtains

Ahh, your own place to do with what you will. Should make you feel in charge of your own life again, at least until Shah gets settled in.
