Has anyone been able to train their Quaker to make 'S' sounds?
I've been working with Yoshi, teaching him to say "My name is Yoshi" when asked what his name is. He is doing really good, but he can't quite make the S sounds, and completely cuts off when he gets to the 'sh' in Yoshi.
We've been working on it for a while, I expected that he would make better progress by now.
Here's a little clip. The first time is me saying it, with his beak moving perfectly with - I didn't think he would say it right away.

Hmmm, I have to listen carefully, Casey can say her own name, but maybe she doesn't pronounce the s completely. I know what she is saying... Lol. I will get her talking in the morning

When Bonnie says the word 'kiss' the Ss sound like a whistle (like the whistle humans make between their teeth). But when she says "What's going on?" the S is fine. But we never set out to teach her specific words/sounds, just repeated some phrases more than others. Yoshi is so cute and you are doing an excellent job with him!

Ralph has some words in his vocabulary with the S at the beginning of the words-- squeak and squawk, for instance, and the S is clear enough. I don't think he knows any words with an SH sound. He can say CH words like chicken though. Though some sounds are harder for parrots to say, practice does make perfect, and often words become clearer in time.

We are gonna keep working on it, hopefully he can get it! I figured some sounds were harder for them to get, was just wondering if 'S' was one of them. But it is clear that it is possible for them to learn it! But Yoshi isn't a normal bird. He still hasn't learned how to whistle! I always assumed whistling was something a bird instinctively knew how to do! Or maybe he knows how, he's just never wanted to

Shah says his own name plus gotta kiss - the sound is clear. Keep trying. As to whistling, Shah can only whistle one note - so it is very easy for him to whistle along to any song he hears

You know I think Casey skips the s in her name and just says ca ee. she does says "want some" when I am eating but I don't think that s is perfect either. I just know what she is saying.

It makes sense that the s sound is hard for them. We use our lips and tongue in speech, and they have to replicate everything from their version of the larynx. They don't even have vocal chords. It's pretty amazing.

Bonnie can say the SH sound fine - I often hold her in my hand and swing her around whilst saying "WHOOSH" and she often says "WSHHH" (at random moments, when she's in the back of the car or when she thinks we can't hear her). So I think they can learn this sound fine. It probably just depends on how motivated they are to say it.

That is so cool of Yoshi. Wow... does he repeat everything you ask him to? Oscar can say a lot of words but he would rather talk when he thinks we aren't listening. Lately he says.... all gone.... lol. He must have sneeze 20 times yesterday and it was so funny cause hubby said I need to take him to the Dr. cause he has a cold. He doesn't just go "ahchoo" he goes "ah ah ahchooooo" over and over.
I am currently teaching him how to say "go away" hopefully he will use it some day in cause of an emergency. lol

Yoshi doesn't repeat everything, but phrases I commonly use he's picking up really quickly. Especially in just the past month or two, he's been like a sponge. The most recent things are "want a treat", "come here", "adventure" (when we go to the post office, or to visit my parents, I ask him if he wants to go on a grand adventure). He's also picked up on "bye bye baby, I'll be back". I tell him that before I leave, and he has started repeating it back. When I get home, contact calls start the moment I enter the door, then when I'm in his sight he starts saying "hey baby....hey baby" until I get him out of his cage. Then he says "gimme kiss" and proceeds to give me a kiss! "You're a pretty bird" has become his favorite thing to say for the past several weeks. Aaaaand...he's finally figured out the "sh" in Yoshi! Here's a video. He decides to say "i love you" two times, then "peekaboo" before he finally answers me! But he's doing a good job now!

Jade says "kiss kiss" and it's perfectly clear, but then, she's an exceptional talker. She can out-talk all the other birds combined.
