Hi everyone, Our approximately 8 year old quaker (Monster) has started plucking around her neck recently. We took her to the vet (who knows her well and has treated her before), and she examined her and said that her body condition aside from the plucking is excellent. We're trying a few approaches to lessen stress, such as covering her cage at night. She's been acting normally until a little 'episode' this morning. She was fine when I let her out of her cage, but a few minutes later, she was perched oddly, so I approached her. She was acting like she was stunned. She couldn't grip or perch and she was completely freaked out. I took her into my lap while I tried to call the vet (unfortunately all of the relevant vets are closed for the Canada day long weekend, and every emergency vet I've seen in regards to birds is completely useless), and within less than a minute she flew out of my lap. It's 5 minutes later an she's completely back to normal. What the hell happened?!? Have any of you experienced this with yours? I'm thinking I should maybe take her back for a CBC? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi Vayla and Monster. I think you are on the right track and need to take her back to the vet as quickly as possible. I have not had this happen with my quaker but it seems very odd. Perhaps someone else on here might be able to add some good advice.
I presume the vet did not do any blood tests and I hope he will when you return.
Best of luck.

My guess, and that's all it is, is that Monster had a mild seizure. They are pretty common in birds. If you want to read up on it, you can start here: www.beautyofbirds.com/seizures.html, though you may want to skip past the more dire possibilities for now, since there isn't much to be done before next week. I'd keep a close eye on her. I would also take some precautions like lowering her perches and food and water, or at least putting something soft on her cage floor, and keeping her as stress-free as possible. Good luck, I hope it turns out to be nothing at all.

It does seem that she had a tiny seizure. I'm going to take her in for blood-work on Monday. I have no idea what she could have been exposed to; she's under constant supervision And her diet hasn't changed in years; she's on tropican pellets with a tiny bit of seed, and she gets fresh fruit and veg, sometimes plain popcorn. She's still acting completely normally since it happened. It's all just so bizarre. I will put a padded blanket on the bottom of her cage tonight just in case; I don't want to move all of her stuff around because that always causes her tons of stress. I'll keep you posted. Thank you all so much.

Good luck Vayla that must have been so scary for you and your bird. I have experienced fits with my dogs before and it isn't nice at all. I hope everything works out well.

Is she plucking around the crop? If so, it could be diet. Is she eating any nuts at all? Shah was plucking around his neck for 3 years - the vet that treated him said it was hormonal. After 3 years took him to another vet who picked it straight away. Reflux from nuts. He has not plucked since - well, it wasn't really plucking, he was actually mutilating himself. His diet is now very restricted as damage was done to his stomach. I cant advise you about the seizure as I have no experience of seizures in birds. Good luck and let us know how you go.
