With summer here, I've been enjoying sitting out in the yard with Yoshi on my shoulder (he's coming around to it as well). The problem is mosquitos are really bad here. I bought some "off" repellent, and I know to never to apply it near him or even inside the house, but I was wondering if after it's applied if it would be safe for him to be on me. Anyone have any experience or advice with this?

Hi Zim, from a personal perspective, I wouldn't put him anywhere near an insecticide. They can be lethal for a bird so I wouldn't take the risk. We used a zapper over the summer (it is winter in Aus now)where the mozzies are electrocuted.

I'm with Jan on this. I try to keep anything with a strong scent, even a relatively pleasant one, away from my birds. Their lungs are very different from ours, and they don't immediately expel what they breathe in. I would limit his trips to hours when mosquitoes are less likely to be active

Ditto Zim... don't let him be too close when you have repellent on... look how quickly it kills bugs... who knows what it will do to his little lungs. I am sure there are some warnings on the can or bottle that even "we" are not to breathe it in.

Thanks guys, I had a feeling it wasn't safe in any way used.
Guess I need to invest in a bug zapper and hope that helps. Or I could take up raising bats. Hmmm...that's a thought. Yoshi hangs upside down from my finger, he would fit right in with a ...flock? of bats!

Off is definitely not to be used around parrots. Its active ingredient is DEET, which is nasty stuff.

There are a number of natural repellents that can be used. Since we recently moved to a home that backs up to a 35 acre forest containing 3 natural ponds and a lot of standing water, we find evenings on the patio and grilling a bite fest. So I am experimenting with planting some of these natural herbs in planters around the patio. I know it's not an immediate fix, but I'll let you know how it goes. I won't be taking Ducky out for awhile, but I'm a mosquito attractant!
