Lately I have noticed that his sounds are similar to words I say to him but not actual words. He will mimic a whistle my daughter makes or if I make tut tut sounds to him. When I say clever boy or peekaboo it sounds like he is copying the sound but not the word. Sorry I hope this makes sense as I am awful for trying to explain things. Does this mean he is possibly ready to talk ? He is 4 months old. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think those signs are really positive! Keep encouraging your birdie by repeating the words you'd like him to say. I wouldn't be surprised if you hear some clearer sounds or even a couple of words within the next few months. It's exciting!

That's the way parrots learn to say things-- by sounding them out, tentatively at first, then, eventually, more clearly. They'll usually practice new words privately before they say them in front of their human friends.

Sounds to me like he is definitely on the right path! The first few things Yoshi said were not very clear at all. I knew what he was saying, tho. They got clearer with time, and he started saying a lot more. And for him, he practiced mostly when he thought I wasn't around / couldn't hear him. I would set up my phone to record and leave it on my desk and go do dishes or something. When I came back and checked, sure enough he'd have been chattering away practicing words.

Maya has been doing what your Quaker is doing, Lesley, for a while. She copies my laugh, makes clicks and kissing noises and, on occasion, sounds like she is trying to say 'hello'. The length of time it takes them to talk can vary from bird to bird but these are all good signs.

Many thanks for all your replies. Yes he does 'practice' the sounds when I'm out the room too. I really didn't know what to expect but all your knowledge has been so helpful. I am really excited. Hubby reckons it should talk due to the amount of time I spend talking to Coco ha ha.

My Normy does this too. He says hello, come on, bye bye, I love you, woohoo, good boy and makes quacking sounds and kisses. He says all these things in a sounding out kind of way, whenever he does this I go over and say the word he is saying and he repeats it. Slowly he becomes clearer! Its so exciting listening to him saying new words!!

Maya's not quite that confident yet. Mostly she still squeaks, clicks and laughs. She may never learn to talk but I don't mind if she never does. I love her anyway. She's lovely, affectionate, hilarious and a little feathered ball of fun with, or without human speech!
