So I'm going to be taking Yoshi to my avian vet in a month or two depending on weather (when it gets below 100 degrees) for a physical. When I go I was thinking I should talk to my vet about microchipping Yoshi. I was doing research because my husband and I would like to move out of AZ but not sure where we want to move yet. Some states have restrictions and one was having him microchipped. Unfortunately he was not banded from his breeder, who didn't like bands because of the complications they can cause.
So my question is has anyone here had their quaker microchipped? Is it safe? Should I consider microchipping or not?

Interesting question. My dogs are always chipped, but I've never chipped a bird. I think it's a little more common in larger birds, though not all that common even then. I got a look at the size of the needle used to chip my dog and can't imagine sticking a bird with that, but they do. One thing to consider is if the vet does it with anesthesia. It's no doubt easier that way for everyone, but I am leery of putting birds under. I've had mixed experiences with that.
I suppose it's a good thing to do if you're concerned about thieves, and need to prove ownership, but it's hard for me to see how useful it is with a lost bird. Even if the bird is found by someone, most people would never think of having it checked for a chip. As always, I could be wrong.

I'm going to talk to my avian vet about it and see. The only reason I'm wondering is I don't want an incident like I had last week. I rescued a 5 year old rosy boa several months ago and one of the maintenance guys were in my apt and saw it then went and told the manager I had an illegal venomous snake. So that was investigated and I had to prove that it was a rosy boa and they are non venomous and proof of ownership. I don't want to have to go through this with Yoshi because he is not banded and most ppl are idiots. If he was microchipped then they would only have to call the company and be told he was a quaker and I was his legal owner. I just want to make sure it's safe.

I went and read up about this, and Avid looks good, and apparently uses a very widespread/common type of 'chip.' This means that most readers would be able to pull up the information when the chip is scanned. They also don't charge a yearly fee to keep your pet's information on file. Here is a link to their page that explains this: www.avidid.com/node/120After reading up on it, I believe I'm going to find a vet in my area who can implant this or advise whether to or not. I'd feel much better if Happy had a chip.

Just wondering if Yoshismom had her parrot microchipped. I'm looking into this myself as we plan on visiting the US for a fair part of the year so having him babysat is out of the question for us. Since we live in Canada, we need a "pet passport" which is easy enough to obtain but he must have a legband, tattoo or microchip. All options seem painful. Looking for info from owners, not sales people.

I am interested in the chip as well. Oscar had a band on his leg when I got him but he kept picking at it and I had it removed. I let him play with it and then it got lost... geezzz.
Wow you got 100+ weather? It is finally spring here and there is still a little snow here and there but melting fast. I finally took Oscar outside today and he enjoyed it for a little bit. It was 30 F. Not too often we see 100 here.
