Bishop has decided today that he wants to build a nest. I think from watching Casey. For the past month now Casey has been spending all day every day building, tearing down, and rebuilding nests. He started tearing up the ends of my rug for material when it first started so we got some of that alfalfa hay you get at the pet store for rabbits. He really like building with that (and eating it and shredding it). Bishop has now started taking some of the hay and tried placing it in different spots but with the hay being small and more suited for Casey's size he has trouble doing much with it and then he starts doing this little grumbling fit when he can't build with the hay. I know Julianna uses wooden dowels and plastic zip ties. Any other building material ideas? I'm trying to gather a list of things to try so I can find what he likes to use. FYI he hates popsicle sticks.

Along with stainless steel spoons Ralph's favorite things to build with are the thin wooden dowels. Sometimes, he'll incorporate some plastic drinking straws into his projects, and just once, he added a cinnamon stick. Bamboo skewers (with the ends blunted) are sometimes suggested, but they weren't up to Ralph's standards when we tried them. On another parrot forum, someone said their QP liked to build with the stripped stems of millet sprays-- something else Ralph rejected. They were fun to chew up though. Ralph won't build with popsicle sticks, but he does enjoy demolishing them.

He despises cinnamon sticks. Usually when he finishes some millet he just leaves the stem do I doubt he'll do anything with that either. And spoons I'm sure he'd be afraid of, he is afraid of drawers and anything that is in or comes out of them and there's the silverware drawer (which he's seen before). I had looked at dowels before but hadn't found any I felt were small enough; I'll have to look harder maybe.

Shah doesn't believe in building nests - too much work for him Bishop seems to have felt the same for the past 10 years until Casey started doing it this year.

I buy long dowels that are about 1/8 inch thick, and cut them down to 6 inch to 9 inch lengths, which is what Ralph likes best for his projects. He just likes to arrange them and rearrange them, and doesn't want to build an actual nest. After he builds for a while, he always squawks for me to come and pull his structure apart so he can start all over.

Back when we let Cupcake build nests, she used lollipop sticks with clothespins hooked onto them. She never really got anywhere with them though, but she sure did try!
