So, yesterday Maya and I got back from Canterbury, where we had spent the weekend for a festival. I was incredibly worried that Maya would be very stressed during the weekend, and planned out a whole series of 'quiet times' for her. It turns out, she took it all in her stride! She ate her lunch on the train, sat on my head while I performed my show, happily sat on the fingers of many of the festival goers and napped on the journey back. Turns out she really didn't mind travelling and had a great time! I have also learned that walking around a town with a parrot means you a) make lots of new friends and b) you get lots of free stuff! It was really hot over the weekend and Maya made it clear she wanted a bath but, as she'd had one on Thursday, I didn't bring anything for her to bathe in. A really nice lady in a high street shop gave me a discount of a little tub and Maya had a bath in the tent during a poetry reading. Everyone thought it was dead cute!

Sounds like you have an up and coming star on your hands. When I used to walk around with Shah (before I moved to where I am living now), I got invited to people's homes, for him to attend openings, etc. They really are a drawcard and they seem to like the attention. What a great experience for Maya and don't you, as a parront, feel just soooooo proud of her??

I think I'm almost - not quite - used to Byron being Maya... When you went on the train, did you take her in a travel cage or a special birdy backpack? Congratulations on the successful trip. Maya sounds like she was adorable! Edit: Oh, I almost forgot - you have a harness, don't you? Did you use that?

Thanks everyone! Biteybird, in answer to your question, Maya is not quite comfortable with her harness yet, we are still working on it, but I've had a lot of good advice so maybe by the summer we'll be able to go out for walks I took Maya out in her birdie backpack. She was very good, but we did have to find closed tent spaces where she could come out for a little while, as we were on the site all day, and I didn't want her to feel bored or claustrophobic. I took her travel cage for when we got to the house we were staying in. Luckily, the festival site had a massive yurt where the performances were taking place, and the performers were more than happy for Maya to sit on my shoulder while they were reading. She was very well behaved, and even joined in with her own version of applause! Also: I know, I'm still explaining to my friends that Maya and Byron are the same bird! Everyone keeps asking if I got a second!

Your trip sounds like a lot of fun and Maya sure is a good little girl. You said you were on stage... mind if I ask what you did on stage?

Sure! I'm a performance poet, so I write for both the page and for performance. This piece was a spoken word show in poetry form called '6 Ways to Break A Bird' and was about my relationship with Maya, and how it relates to being a bit of a misfit, being misunderstood, and the cliché of women being called 'birds', which is ironic, considering how shameless parrots are! Maya was hilarious, she squeaked and pranced at really pertinent moments during the piece. People seemed to really enjoy it!

I have no doubt that it will be your performance and Maya's interjections that will remain in everyone's mind for a very long time to come.
