He leans a certain way if he wants me to take him there It's had to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it how compelling those leans are. My grey, at 475g, is especially good at it because I have to move in her desired direction to get some relief from her nails, but even my 50g lovebird could get me to go where he wanted. Maybe there is some mind control going on there.

Ah yes, the bird-lean directional guidance protocol is well known by us avian caretakers

That sounds like progress to me, Angela! Well done! As I said, I'm not as experienced as any of the other guys on the forum, but it sounds to me like that's a step forward. I guess it's going to be a lot to do with just working out that the hands around him now won't do whatever it was that frightened him in the first place. It might have been something very small, but some people can be incredibly insensitive with animals, like the man who wouldn't leave Maya alone, when I said, "she's tired, she'll bite if you keep doing that," and he said "she doesn't bite you though." Well, no, of course she doesn't: a) she knows me, and b) in case he hadn't noticed, I had paid attention to the fact that she was tired and withdrawn my hand from the case!
He didn't mean any harm, he was just ignorant, and assumed that because she's small and cute, she would eventually submit and do what he wanted. There is a classic example of someone who has never come across a parrot! A similar thing might have happened to Loki, perhaps in a situation where he was less able to defend himself, or where he had not had the good experiences that Maya has had. It may just take him time to learn that this is not how hands normally behave. Good luck and keep going!

P.S. I have also become acquainted with 'the lean'. Maya's is lean-with-wing-flap-and-insistent-croak-until-said-lean-is-obeyed. It works very well.

Oh Easttex definitely mind control happening here The little lean and wing flap thing is just so darn cute! My sister tells me I sound like the crazy cat lady except it's with birds lol... It is hard for people to understand how you can become so attached to 'just a little bird'. Sometimes annoys me having to explain but then I think why do I have to explain myself?? Oh well Beccilouise you did warn him a few times.... Maybe just maybe he'll think about it next time before poking an animal he is not familiar with.... Yes time and patience. As I said I feel like it's a very small victory. Hopefully he'll continue to improve!

Bechilouise, I'm imagining the "I told you so" look you must have been battling not to show too much to that afore-mentioned idiot.

Hahahaha, oh my god, you should have seen it! I have to say, MOST people that Maya came into contact with were very sensible, asking before they put a finger out to her, listening to my advice, being very gentle and paying attention when I said to give her space. Adults tended to be very good with their children, asking me 'what do we need to do?' and then showing the child before the child held Maya. There were times she was co-operative, and times when she just wanted to stay with me, and if she clamped herself to my shoulder and refused to step up, people were mostly very good when I said, "she feels a bit overwhelmed, come back a bit later." Most people were quite content just to look at her to be honest. So it was just that idiot, on the last leg of our journey home. Keep going, though, Angela! It sounds like Loki is getting there. Hopefully he will learn soon that YOUR hands and the hands of your family will never hurt him.

Woohoo another little success tonight! Usually when he flies/drifts to the floor, to pick him up, I have to chase him. Well tonight after my shower he flew off the towel rack onto the floor and I kinda followed him into the lounge room thinking I'd have to corner him to catch him as usual. Well after a little flutter he just stopped dead in the middle of the floor and looked up at me. So I picked him straight up! Fist time EVER in the 8ish weeks we've had him Also when I got home from work I could hear Loki making the kissing noise then saying 'good boy'... Kiss kiss kiss 'good boy' Was so cute! Still no talking from Skye, just a lot of screaming and a million different whistles lol! Sounds like you had a truly wonderful time with Maya on your trip

awww, good little Loki! sounds like he's getting there! I have no talking from Maya either, just kisses noises, my laughing and a WHOLE load of mess on the floor! She is currently stuffing her face with laffabers nutriberries, which are her favourite treat. She is looking very pleased with herself. Hope Loki keeps up his excellent progress!

Angela, it sounds like Loki has settled in fine! Maybe he'll teach Skye some words. The whistles and other noises often precede talking (at least they did with Bonnie).

Yes Biteybird it finally feels like he's getting used to us and is starting to settle in Oh it's interesting to know the whistles precede talking... I didn't know that! Well that's exciting
