Hi I bought a Quaker 2 days ago and was told it is 4 months old. It is quite vocal which is fine then he does what I can only describe as light a car or a motorbike slight noise , it starts as a low sound then repeats it till it a high pitch sound. Is this normal behaviour of a baby. I just have this feeling that I have bought an older bird rather than a baby . I have done a video but it seems you cannot put these on . Any advice

The video must be posted to another site. I've had luck with YouTube. You can create a free account there, and you don't have to make your videos public. Back here, while creating a post, click on the video icon, (next to the photo icon) and insert the URL. You can copy that from the video site and paste it here. Without seeing anything of your new one, I'll just say that parrots start picking up things in their environment quite early. Four months old is not that much of a baby anymore. He has weaned and fledged weeks ago, if he was allowed to. He's a juvenile really. It will be hard to impossible to estimate his age with or without a video, but I can safely say that we'd all like to see it anyway.

I have a cockatiel that I got at eight weeks of age, barely weaned (in fact, I don't think he was; he just had no choice but to eat regular food once he moved in with us) and he was saying "pretty baby" and whistling Andy Griffith in no time. Easily by four months of age.

The way to tell their age is to count the number of rings around each toe nail... no wait.... that is how you tell how old a tree is. Sorry... just being silly here.

Cheeky Julianna...LOL!
Welcome to the forum. Our QP, Bonnie, was 2 mths (just weaned) when we got her and she was imitating all sorts of noises (kisses, zip sounds) and could say "good girl" by 10 weeks old. So in my opinion your QP could indeed be just 4 mths old & just very smart. Is he saying any words yet or just copying sounds so far?

They can learn to talk and imitate very young. Maya was four months old when I bought her and she began to imitate my laugh and kiss noises almost immediately. Did your breeder give you a hatch certificate? Otherwise, behaviour is a pretty key clue. If the birdie is still very placid, amiable and relatively biddable, it's almost definitely a young bird. If it is bossy and displays territorial behaviour, more likely to be slightly older. As with all intelligent species, there are always exceptions to this rule as each bird is an individual. I'd say it still looks pretty good your birdie is young. He may just be imitating a noise he heard outside one day.

I've only had my 4 month old for a few days and she has already started to mimic the cat (who is probably the most vocal cat I've ever seen), she mostly does what I call a trill and a low purr type noise but she responds to the cat so I can tell she is trying to mimic her, but this only after a few days, nutso.
