My quaker ate alot of rice last night...when I uncovered her cage this morning I found piles of the rice half digested on the cage floor. She has since been drooling a clear liquid out of her mouth occasionally. She seems more quiet than usual. Mostly just stand on the edge of her water dish. Did she just overeat? Do they do that? I am not sure what to do. Thanks so very much for any advice.

Hi Delia. That's a confusing bunch of symptoms she's showing. If she regurgitated from her crop, and she seems overly fond of something in her cage lately, it could be breeding behavior. If it was actual vomit from her stomach, it's more worrisome. And the saliva can be several things, but in every case I personally know of, it has been linked to a bacterial infection. I would get her in to see an avian vet to be safe, especially since she doesn't seem like herself. Good luck! I hope it's nothing serious.

Get to the vet as quick as you can. As Easttex says, it could be a bacterial infection. Let us know how you go. Good luck.

Definitely agree that a vet visit is in order. Get there as soon as possible! Good luck!

Update.......Birdie is fine. She did just eat too much rice (my bad for letting her have it.). She was better in the eve and by next morning she was back to her usual self. She has been fine ever since. Yes, I had her checked out. I feel blessed that it was nothing serious.

Maybe next time you offer rice, just give her a little bit. Four or five grains. That way she won't overdo it.

That must be a relief! Peppy loves rice, too, but as far as I know has never o.d.'d on it. Thank you for the update!

Thanks goodness she is better. I have never given Shah rice - might give him a couple of grains to see if he likes it.

Thank goodness, Delia! Bonnie loves to gobble cooked white rice - I don't know how much she would eat if I let her keep going. I'm glad your birdie is OK.

Glad to hear your little one is okay!! Cupcake will pig out on rice too... I've never known her to eat to excess like that, but if there is a food that might inspire her to overeat, rice is a good candidate. She generally eats as much of it as we will give her.
