My Quaker, Gondo, clearly sees me as her mate - but she gets... 'horny.' I don't mind dealing with a bipolar mischievous bird who defends my head from my hands, but this is something I don't know how to deal with. She's the only parrot in the house, and she mostly only comes in contact with me (which I'm trying to change by getting others to hold her, but they aren't very willing.) I don't encourage it, and try to discourage it - but the only thing I can really do is put her on a perch by herself, but afterwards she still wants to 'mate.' HALP! She used to get this way around late fall only, but then she started late fall and early spring - now it's summer and she still has spring fever. Any tips? Anything I can do to discourage it?
She's 10 now. In 2012 she laid 4 eggs, not all at once, but in succession - she laid 3 together and one by itself. 2013 she laid 14 eggs in groups of 5, 4, 3, and 2. This year she laid 3 eggs and I think they were taken away from her too quickly, then she laid 5 eggs and I wanted to let her keep them for as long as she was going to sit on them, and then a stupid person decided to take them away from her before asking me. I'm really worried that she could get egg bound with all the eggs she is producing. Since I live in a tropical place, there isn't a huge change in daylight time between summer and winter, perhaps that could be messing with her hormones. How can I stabilize her hormones? How can I encourage her to only lay a few eggs, rather than turning into a chicken whenever she lays an egg? I recently have been able to hold her a lot more, perhaps it's because I'm holding her for longer periods of time? Any suggestions would be gladly taken!
Thanks!
