Byron always has a few of his favourite (healthy) snacks in his cage. I put him on the perch outside and he climbs in. Often, when I close the cage and say "be a good boy, see you later!" he'll make a couple of objecting squeaks but, by that point, he's usually got a face full of boiled peas and doesn't care. He also has eight hanging toys in his cage and 6 foot toys, and I buy him new ones roughly once a month or so, and rotate the old ones often to keep things interesting. This helps, as there are toys in there that he loves to play with. Sometimes he'll get fed up of being away from his cage and want to go back for some play time, which he makes very clear by flying out of the living room door and squeaking until I follow him, at which point he will march me solemnly to the pet room and demand to be taken inside. He doesn't always want to go in, but in general, putting him away is not a problem. However, I do think a lot of this is to do with the fact that the routine is not solid and so he can't always predict when he's going away! Hope your little Skye is getting used to things a bit better, he sounds like a feisty one! Byron had a DNA test a little while ago on the vet's recommendation (so that we can quickly rule out gender-related diseases if ever the need arises) so we're waiting on the results and very much hoping he will respond to the name 'Maya' if it turns out he's a 'she'! I will face-palm so much if that turns out to be the case, but will love him/her none the less, obviously

Yes thanks Beccilouise he is getting used to the routine. I've stopped getting him out for breaky as we simply run out of time. He squawks a little when I leave but that's standard for him! Hubby is away at the moment and Joel and I had to go outside to water the garden last night. Skye was out of his cage of course as we were home from work and school but we kinda snuck out and shut the kitchen door off so he couldn't follow us. Well you'd think the world ended lol. Boy did he let out some screaming lol! We had snuck out over the weekend too to quickly go to the supermarket to get a couple of things for dinner and I thought instead of trying to put him away it might be just as easy to leave him for 10 minutes. Well did he object then! LOL Again you'd think I had chopped off a wing or something lol!

Bonnie screams too, when we sneak out to the backyard to do odd things (a couple of times she's almost literally had the door shut in her face & sits on the window sill making silly noises), but it doesn't last very long now. Within minutes she's recovered and feeding her face. But for the first minute it sounds like she's being "murder-ated" (as we jokingly call it).

Unlike most parronts... I always leave Oscar out of his cage when I go out. I can go for hours on end and he does not mind whatsoever. He has access to two cages and ladders to crawl up should he fly down. Touch wood... it has been 5 years and no problems yet. However, he is not a flyer so I think I have less to worry about. (note:... I said "I Think"... ) lol

It sounds nice that you can leave Oscar out, Julianna I think Byron IS a flier. He's also quite brazen and I think he really would get into trouble, particularly when his wing feathers grow back. I'm reluctant to clip them too much again, as I think it frustrates him that he can't fly. However, his cage is very spacious and he has LOADS of toys. The radio is on for him and he gets lots of attention every day. He seems happy and I hope very much that he is

Yeah I figure with time he'll get used to us leaving for bits and pieces. He is a flyer!!!!! He kinda does this crazy thing at night where he'll fly around like crazy.... He could be on his cage then he quickly looks around then dive bombs, lands, looks around, then dive bombs again. He'll do this a few times. I don't think he's worried I think he's just burning off some energy lol! It's hilarious to watch lol!

Cupcake does the periodic daredevil flight as well. I think she's just having fun. We call it her "victory lap". I worry she'll make a mistake and hurt herself because she's going so fast in such tight spaces, but she manages okay. Her flight capabilities are quite impressive. One time when she was still very young she did clip herself on the corner of a chair and scrape her face, but we have not had a repeat of that sort of issue, thankfully.

I think that a nite time is when they like to exercise their wings. Although Oscar does not fly every evening he will hold on tight and flap his wings very rapidly. Most of the time he does it on his own but other times I encourage him by lifting him up high with my left hand and then waving my right hand beside him while say... fly Oscar fly... He loves this. I swear I can see him smile... lol

Yes Aaron it is a bit daredevilish!!! I should try to get it on tape, but not sure if I could follow with the camera that well! It's like he's really happy and excited then does his little dive bomb, fly around, land, dive bomb etc... I figured it was just burning off some energy Julianna Looks like that's where you got your amazing profile pic Julianna! Skye has had a little clip of the door frame a couple of weeks ago, but it didn't slow him down or stop him from doing it again (the crazy flying thing that is)!!! I nearly choked because I sucked in my breath real quick ready to have a heart attack, but he didn't even slow down!

Bonnie does the crazy flying thing too. We call it "flying around stupid". I'm amazed she doesn't hit something, let alone see where she's going.

Yeah, it's totally amazing that they don't run into things. It just goes to show you how much faster their nervous systems are moving than ours. As if those crazy little super-fast beating hearts weren't a dead giveaway. Julianna, they definitely smile with their eyes! Cupcake's eyes are so expressive-- I'm assuming they are all like that, but I can definitely tell when she's smiling

Byron's wing hasn't grown back yet, but he does the mental 'flying in place' thing, and definitely smiles with his WHOLE BODY, particularly just after he's done something really naughty! I think he'll be so happy when he can fly again, but we may have to keep the doors closed and get a cabinet for david's trophies so Bys doesn't knock them everywhere!
